ZTE Spro Plus –

ZTE Spro Plus (изображение: businesswire.com).

ZTE Spro Plus | News, Features, Release Date, Specs

The ZTE Spro 2 is one of those unusual hybrid devices that just made sense — it combined a projector with a 4G LTE hotspot, a whopping battery pack, and a sensibly sized touchscreen, making it a cool entertainment all-rounder. At ZTE though, bigger is better when it comes to the Spro range, and it has introduced the Spro Plus.

If the Spro 2 was a smartphone in disguise, the Spro Plus is a tablet. On the front is a massive 8.4-inch AMOLED touchscreen with a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, ensuring it keeps up with all the high-end tablets already on sale. The big difference between it and others is that it has a projector built into the oversize body. The Spro 2 made do with an LED lamp, but the Spro Plus uses a brighter 500 lumens laser to project its image, resulting in a better ratio and improved visibility regardless of the room conditions.

How big’s the projected screen? ZTE says it’s 80 inches wide from a distance of about 3 feet, with a 720p resolution. Sound can be provided by the Spro Plus itself, using a JBL-developed audio system played through a pair of 4-watt speakers. The Spro Plus is powered by a Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM. It comes installed with customized version of Android’s 6.0 Marshmallow OS and complete access to the Google Play Store. That means you can download Netflix (or your streaming media app of choice) and throw the image up on a handy screen or wall.

To do that, you’ll need a data connection. The Spro Plus will come as either a Wi-Fi or 4G LTE model, so there’s no need to burn through your phone’s data allowance. Media doesn’t have to be streamed either, as the Spro Plus has 32GB of internal memory plus a MicroSD card expansion slot, so it’s ready for an additional 128GB. Finally, its 12,100mAh battery means you won’t even need a wall socket to project your movie; it will provide up to four hours of use before running out.

While it seems to project just fine, the entire projector seems to run incredibly hot. Granted the demo units had been on and plugged in for quite a while, I still didn’t enjoy feeling that kind of heat while using the display. There was also a considerable amount of lag when simply swiping between home screens, and while ZTE says it’s running a customized version of Marshmallow, all the demo devices were running Android 4.4. It’s unclear if they just hadn’t been updated yet.

The stand at the bottom of the projector seemed a little flimsy and didn’t exactly provide the best support, as you needed good balance to get the device to stand up. Even then, it’s hardly pointing any higher than it was flat. The tripod on the other hand was pretty decent and felt well-desinged, offering relatively strong support for the projector.

Thankfully, the projection seemed to be the best part about the device. I was impressed at its clarity and color balance in dim lighting at its projected size.

ZTE is promoting the Spro Plus to business users, and has included voice control through Harman-produced microphones as well as USB camera support for conference calls. The Wi-Fi version of the Spro Plus will be sold globally through ZTE’s website before the summer, with the 4G LTE model joining it sometime afterwards. The Spro 2 was sold through AT&T and Verizon, so here’s a chance the Spro Plus will get a network version in the future. The all-important price hasn’t been announced, but with the Spro 2 costing upwards of $500, don’t expect it to be cheap.

ZTE Spro Plus is a portable projector with lasers

I've honestly never found myself desperate for a portable projector, but there does seem to be a market for these kind of devices. ZTE's Spro Plus (pronounced S-Pro, despite the lack of a dash) is a portable Android-powered projector with a powerful sound JBL sound system and a large 8.4-inch 2K display. It also acts as a Wi-Fi hotspot.

Instead of typical LED bulbs, it uses lasers that are able to project an 80-inch image from 2.4 meters (7.9 feet), though I'm guessing it has to be completely dark for this really to be any good. During my time with the Spro Plus though, I was impressed with how bright the laser-projected image was in a lit room. Even though the image output was just at HD quality (that's 1,280x720 pixels), the picture still looked great.

ZTE's Spro Plus smart projector runs on Android and lasers (pictures)

The Spro Plus will debut globally this summer, with pricing yet to be determined. If it's not too expensive, this could be quite a handy device to lug around for a vacation to watch Netflix, which is how I could picture myself actually wanting a gadget like this.

  • Android 6.0 Marshmallow software
  • Doubles as a Wi-Fi hotspot with LTE connectivity
  • 12,100mAh battery with 6 hours of projection time
  • JBL sound system with 2.4-watt speakers
  • 8.4-inch display
  • Weighs less than 1kg (2.2 pounds)

ZTE says the projector is capable of projecting on any surface with a 500 lumens brightness, and automatic focus keeps the image sharp. You can also plug in a video camera to the Spro Plus via the USB port and use it as a video meeting device, as it's able to pick up voices from 5 meters away. Voice commands are also supported.

Another thing you can do with this gadget since it runs Android is to link up a Bluetooth gaming controller and then play games on a large display instead of playing it on your phone. Lastly, the Spro Plus also has Miracast support, so you can mirror your phone's display to the projector as well.

ZTE announces Spro Plus, a premium quality Android projector and wifi hotspot

Android’s flexibility as an operating system has prompted some companies, like ZTE, to create some pretty interesting products that don’t fit neatly into our pre-existing categories. Foremost among these is the company’s Spro line, which is a series of projector/wifi hotspot combos that just saw its third addition with the announcement of the Spro Plus.

While the Spro and the Spro 2 have been around for quite a while, there’s no word yet as to whether a Spro 3 is in the works. Rather, ZTE is creating a new Plus line, which is a new category within the Spro family that tricks out the concept by introducing more premium specs.

A quick comparison to the Spro 2 quickly reveals how ZTE has improved on their design. Whereas the Spro 2 had a 6300mAh battery that kept it alive for 2.5-3 hours of projection time, the Spro Plus sports a 12100mAh battery that keeps it going for up to 4 hours. We were impressed with the Spro 2’s brightness, which offers 200 lumens at 20,000 hours, but the Plus model more than doubles this figure, bringing 500 lumens to the table.

Although the display isn’t really your main concern with a device like this, the 720p 5-inch screen on the Spro 2 did look a little bit grainy. This display has been enlarged to 8.4 inches on the Plus and tightened to a clean 2K resolution. The Plus also comes with Marshmallow rather than Lollipop, and the processor is the Snapdragon 801 instead of the 800. It’s true that you’re dealing with a significantly larger device with the Plus, but its extra bulk and heft offers an extra gig of RAM over the Spro 2’s 2GB, and instead of a paltry 16GB of internal storage, you get the option between 32 and a whopping 128GB. Oh, and they’ve tacked on voice control.

Spro 2 pictured.

The wifi version of the Spro Plus is slated to hit the market in Q2 2016 with an LTE version coming later this year. We don’t have any word as to whether partnerships have been secured with carriers, but we do know that the device will come in gold, black, and silver variations. We’re expecting this projector/hotspot device to sell for more than its already pricey little brother, which went for about $400 on launch. This is a pretty high pricetag for those who are just looking for casual media consumption, but for those who see potential workplace applications, the Spro Plus might be a pretty useful tool.

What are your thoughts regarding ZTE’s new premium-version upgrade of their projector line? Something you might be interested in, or a gimmick that you’ll be passing on? Let us know your opinion in the comments!

ZTE Spro Plus Smart Projector Review | Trusted Reviews

Hands-on: ZTE’s mini-projector looks awesomeTablets attempting to double as home projectors aren’t all that new. For the past couple of years, Lenovo has been testing the hybrid water. However, despite the firm’s best efforts, devices such as the Yoga Tab 3 Pro have generally failed to deliver on the projector side of things, as a result on their focus being on tablets first.

Looking to solve this problem is Chinese firm ZTE, which has chosen to take an alternative approach, creating a mobile device that aims to be a projector first, tablet second.

This makes the Spro Plus Smart Projector one of the most interesting devices to arrive at MWC 2016.

6 things you need to know about the ZTE Spro Plus Smart Projector

1) Lasers are cool: For starters, unlike the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro, the Spro is completely bulb-free. Instead of the more common bulb and DLP projector solutions, the Spro uses laser projection tech.

ZTE claims this lets the Spro Plus project sharper and brighter images in a variety of lighting conditions, and will radically extend its shelf life by removing the need to change bulbs.

2) It’s pretty darn bright: When ZTE says bright, it means really bright. The spokesman on hand told me that the Spro has a massive 500 lumens maximum brightness. That’s twice the lumen count of its predecessor, the Spro 2, and 10 times as dazzling as the 50 lumen projector seen on the Lenovo Yoga Tab 3 Pro.

On paper, this means the Spro should have little problem playing movies at HD quality at sizes up to 80-inches across. That’s 10-inches more than the Yoga Tab Pro 3, which can beam images up to 70-inches across.3) It’s loud too: The Spro Plus is also set to be pretty loud by tablet standards, with ZTE having loaded it with Dual JBL, 4W Dolby Digital sound speakers. While these aren’t a replacement for a full surround-sound system, having had a listen I can tell you that they’re more than good enough for bedroom viewing.

4)  Data, data and more data: For those looking to consume content on the move, or stream while away from a Wi-Fi network, ZTE’s also made the Spro Plus LTE-ready. So long as you have a good data package, then, you should be able to use it to watch Netflix on the go.

5) Android Marshmallow from the off: The Spro Plus is powered by Google’s Android Marshmallow operating system. As a result, Spro Plus users should have access to all their favourite media services – such as Netflix, Amazon, BBC iPlayer, Sky Q and Crunchyroll. Be warned, however: it’s a pretty heavily skinned version of Marshmallow.

6) You’ll get at least half a season of Game of Thrones viewing from one charge: If you plan on binge-watching a series while away from the mains, the Spro should have you covered. A ZTE spokesman at the demo told me that the Spro’s 12,100mAh battery will offer “up to six hours of projection time” off a single charge. This means that you should be able to watch half a series’ worth of content without worrying about running out of juice.Don’t miss the latest tablet and smartphone deals at Amazon

ZTE Spro Plus Smart Project: Opening impressions

The Spro Plus may sound like a weird device, but I can see it delivering on a number of fronts. It could be the ideal TV/home entertainment solution for students living in small accommodation, or for those who travel regularly.

Whether it will make good on this promise will largely be determined by one key detail that ZTE’s yet to announce, however – its price.
