Sony x5000 action

Sony CDP-X5000

From a set of high-end separates in very good looking shoebox format - with an itch : footprint-people don't buy high-end, high-end-people unfortunately don't buy Sony, and design-people still have a crush on B&O.

The same fate did befall the first Precise P7 and Falcon sets (both 1978), the Syscon 353CD ('82) and, somewhat differently, the Scenario S7 and Placido components ('91). Some things obviously never change.

In the Series 5000 (# 5000), the 10mm front is reminiscent of what was planned for the pre-Esprit and ESPRIT series - the rest is very different. The slabs of aluminium making the sides and top are reminiscent of the Precise P7 units - but the rest is very different :-)

This notwithstanding, the CDP-X5000 and CDP-X3000 quickly became respected CD drives : 100% non-magnetic aluminium chassis, a Fixed Pickup Mechanism, an AES/EBU output, careful layout of the 4-layer glass epoxy boards, one R-Core transformer, Frame & Beam chassis.

Despite an elaborate Current Pulse digital-to-analogue section, the CDP-X5000 is an integrated CD player with, mainly, a drive vocation : the AES/EBU digital output isn't present for peanuts and that is probably why the X5000 doesn't have a VC filter section like the CDP-X3000 has.

Several dedicated audiophile accessories were made available as well for the X5000 seven months after the series' launch : a brass puck, a Corian puck and an opaque Corian lid.

None of these were distributed (or even mentioned) outside Japan - Sony's sky high silliness as usual.

The CDP-X5000 received rave reviews everywhere and excellent sales in Japan but the series nevertheless got shelved rather rapidly.

Unlike what is commonly believed, the # 3000 and # 5000 separates are NOT part of the ES series.

The french and german Sony attempted to unload their stocks more easily, late in time, by adding an ES logo next to the model scripting, and on the cartons, and in the manuals. This however remained unseen elsewhere, including Japan, and was just plain bad marketing miscalculation.

The 5000s sold very well in Japan and didn't need an added ES logo to do so - adding it on EU models didn't boost sales either as ES, by then, already didn't mean much anymore.

Nudies of an X5000 here. STB-A5000 : here, STB-B5000 : here XLD-A5000 : here.

SJCAM SJ5000X Elite Sony action camera specifications announced

SJCAM release official details of the $149.99 SJCAM SJ5000X Elite action camera with Sony IMX078 sensor, 4K video and Gyro features.

A few days back we reviewed the SJ4000+ Gyro, its a stunning buy for the money and especially impressive since it recorded in 2K, boasted an amazing hardware image stabilisation feature and ships with a box load of useful accessories and attachments.

Next in line and available for pre-order now, is the SJCAM SJ5000X action camera. This new model comes with a similar chassis, is available in bright colours but adds a Sony IMX078 sensor and up to 4K recording to the mix.

The 12 mega-pixel Sony IMX078 is a back illuminated CMOS image sensor with higher pixel counts and sensitivity. The sensor has a pixel size of 1.55 µm and in the SJ5000x can be set to record at wide-angles of 170, 140, 110 and 70 degrees.

A similar hardware gyro is incorporated in to the design for smooth video, so we are looking at an action camera that can record smooth video of up to 4K (interpolated) with richer detail than the already very impressive SJ4000+.

Other details include a new Novatek NTK96660 CPU, WIFI for use with an Android or iOS smartphone, a larger built-in 2-inch display, new burst and timer modes and the same boatload of hardware accessories that shipped with the SJ4000+.

Sony fdr-x1000v 4k action camera review | Pevly

FDR-X1000v is a 4K action camera manufactured by Japanese multinational giant – Sony. With it’s 399.99$ retail price-tag, x1000v belongs to a group of higher-end sports cameras. At the same time, it’s the most serious competitor to the GoPro Hero 4 black.

Biggest selling point of the Sony’s action cam besides the 4K video recording are : steady-shoot stabilization, splash-profuseness and external microphone support together with it’s unique aesthetics and aerodynamic shape.

Camera comes in two versions :

  • FDR-X1000V/W (base)
  • FDR-X1000VR/W (with live-view remote)

Theo only difference between the two version is that the second one includes a live-view remote controller. There are also several bundles offered for both models. Since different retailers have different accessories offered in those deals, it’s not possible to categorize them. If you need additional accessorizes, just pay attention to different bundles available.

In this article, I’ll try to provide you with an honest and in-depth information regarding FDR-X1000VR/W performance, design, built, video, photo and audio quality. I borrowed this  camera from a friend of mine, so I had limited time to test it out. Nevertheless I had enough time to test all of it’s options and see its pros and cons.

Sony 4K x1000V action camera specification

In the table below, you can see the product specification. I pointed out only the most important things, for full product specs, visit Sony’s website.

What’s inside the box?

  • 1x camera
  • 1x battery
  • 1x waterproof housing
  • 1x micro USB cable
  • 1x attachment buckle
  • 1x flat adhesive mount
  • 1x curved adhesive mount
  • 1x user manual
  • 1x advertising and manual sheet

Waterproof housing allows camera to go underwater up to 10m ( 32.81 ft). If you intend to dive way beyond 10m, you’ll need to get AKA-DDX1K diving door. With this extra accessory, you can go up to 60m (197 ft). The existing door should be replaced with the diving door, and the process is described in this Sony’s instructional video.

Please note that camera itself is not waterproof. It’s spalshproof, which means that it is resistant to water drops such as light rain, but it can’t go underwater without the case. The quality of the waterproof case which arrives with a camera is better compared to some of the earlier models. Biggest improvement is that the buttons are now much easier to press and the whole user experience is way more convenient.

Live-view remote controller

Live-view remote RMLVR2  is actually a cooler way of calling the external, watch-shaped LCD which allows you to change settings. Basically with live view, you have access to all the settings on your wrist.

What is more important, it enables you to preview your videos in real time thanks to a tiny screen, allowing you to aligning the camera angle perfectly.

In my experience while hiking, it was really a breeze to use the live-view remote controller. It not only connects quickly to the camera, but also works quite fast. I found it easier and quicker to change settings on the remote than on the camera itself.

Its working distance in my tests was around 10-12m. Perhaps irrelevant, but interesting option is that you can set it up to show time on display, like a real watch.

On the left side of the controller are navigation buttons used for swapping modes (photo, video, interval) where as the shutter button is on the right side (REC/Enter). On top there is a display and menu, and bottom has power button.

This accessory can be bought as a part of kit together with all the stuff that comes with basic kit for $499.99 or separately for around 150$. Obviously if you’re certain you’ll be needing a live-view remote, it’s more cost-effective to get it as a part of the bundle.

Do not forget that even though Sony’s camera has an LCD, you can’t playback nor live-view videos on it. However if you do not wish to invest in a live-view remote, you can always use the app to preview the videos (for further clarification please see WiFi app part of the article). On the other hand, for people using Sony fdr-x1000v in extreme situations, it is far more convenient to have a live-view remote around the wrist while doing sports.

Design and built quality

One thing I like about Sony’s action cameras is their form factor. Unlike plenty of other GoPro competitors, Sony remained loyal to the unique and aerodynamic”pistol” shape. With it’s dimensions (L*W*H) 1.0 x 2.0 x 3.5″ / 24.4 x 51.7 x 88.9 mm), X1000V is slightly bigger and heavier compared to its predecessors. Aesthetically, white simple design of the body looks quite appealing.

Camera built quality is excellent. It feels rugged and very well-crafted. In addition to great quality of the body, camera is also splashproof (IPX4-class rating) and drop resistant (up to 1.5m height when in waterproof  case, according to manufacturer). It can be used in the winter when the temperatures go bellow zero (up to -10°C)

Buttons and ports

Looking it from the front side, besides the Zeiss Tessar, wide-angle 170° lens, there is a stereo microphone.

One major change in design and usability is that lock and record buttons are positioned on top of the camera. Previous models like AS100V had those buttons on the back which wasn’t that user friendly, since it caused unnecessary vibration when you press them. Except them, we have a infrared remote receiver  and a recording indicator.

On the left site, never Sony FDR-X1000V, right side Sony AS-1000V – comparing differences of the top side of both cameras.

At its back FDR-AS1000V has lock mechanism which hides battery compartment together with MicroSD slot, HDMI out and USB port. Some of the earlier models had HDMI and USB ports at the back.

Large portion of the camera’s side is taken by a display. There will be more on display and its abilities later. Next to it there are two navigational buttons and a speaker.

Finally, at the bottom, camera has attachment screw hole (used for accessories adapters), tripod mount and an external mic jack.

Video Quality

Video quality is without any doubt the most important buying trigger for each and every person out there. That’s why I’ll go right to the point. In my tests Sony FDR-X1000V provided quite good video sharpness, focus and colors. Please bear in mind that I recorded all the videos in “vivid” color, since the “neutral” one is too bleached out. Neutral colors are for people who want to color-correct videos later in post-production.

Thanks to it’s 170°angle ZEISS® Tessar® Lens, camera provides very good video output even when facing the direct sunlight. Some people (especially those who never used an action camera before) might find a wide-angle a bit odd. Like any other ultra wide-angle lens, comes the fish-eye distortion. Which means some of the objects might appear distorted. Luckily distortion can be eliminated by reducing the angle to 120°.

4K video performance test

Unlike some of the previous so called “4K” cameras I tested, this one is an authentic 4K camera. It provides actual 3840 x 2160 resolution. Please note that 4k videos can be recorded in 60mbs and 100mbs. Since 4k is quite demanding resolution, you’ll need fast and reliable memory card. In order to record in 100mbs in 4k you’ll need at least 64GB U-3 memory card.

Video frames – 4k vs 1080p

One thing that bothered me is that steadyshoot stabilization can’t be activated when recording in 4K. But neither can GoPro Hero 4 , nor any other I am aware of currently.

SteadyShot is an electronic image stabilization. Steady shoot does not work in 4K. When enabled, it reduces the angle to 120° automatically, no matter if you have it turned on or off.

Photo Quality

I mentioned at the beginning that I had only a few days to test the camera, so I was unable to take some super-cool images. My apologies for that. Note that these samples are compressed and resized, you can download original size files here.

Photo Credits : Stefan Krecmar Krstic 2016

My only disappointment is night quality. Although it’s far from bad, I honestly expected a bit better low-light performance from a high end action camera.

Audio Quality

Whenever someone asked me “I need an action camera with the best sound quality” my reply was, go with a Sony. My previous Sony AS100V had stereo mic which worked better than any other camera I tested. FDR-1000V also has a built in stereo microphone, but can also support an external mic in case you need one.

A simple click onto a prev or next button is enough to enable you to navigate through different modes. There are 8 modes that Sony X1000V offers :

  • Movie
  • Photo
  • Itvl (Interval)
  • Live
  • Setup
  • Play
  • PWOFF (power off)
  • Loop

To fully understand what each does, I recommend you to read the online manual. Below, I’ll provide you with only basic information about each of the modes.

Obviously, while you are in a movie mode, you’ll be able to record a video. There are several ways to initiate the recording. Fastest way is just to press the REC button located at the top of the camera while the camera is turned off. This is a sort of a quick-capture option, and it’s quite handy when you want to record something very fast.

One thing though, even with this quick capture option, there is approximately 3,11 seconds delay when you press the shutter button until the camera boots itself and start recording.

Another way is to turn the camera on, press nav button to power the camera on and once “Movie appears on the screen” initiate the recording by pressing the REC button.

Third way to record a clip with the Sony 4K action camera is via Live-View remote controller.

Photo mode

Unlike with video, there is no quick capture option for photo. To take a still image, you’ll have to use navigational buttons, enter the Photo mode and press the shutter button to capture the image.  Alternatively you can use the live-view remote for this as well.

Interval mode

ITVL or interval mode will capture a still image continuously in specified intervals until you stop shooting. This mode is mainly used for time-lapse photography. You can select the following intervals :

My setup for time-lapse photography.

One very interesting ability  that not many action cameras have (especially low-end ones) is live steaming via Ustream. Video below illustrates how live streaming works, so if this feature is something you find important, make sure to watch the video.

Even though the video depicts AS1000V, process is the same for the FDR-X1000V. If you require more information on live streaming, you can check page 79 of the online manual.

Setup (Settings) is them most versatile and robust of all modes. It contains lots of sub-modes divided into groups. In the next few paragraphs, I’ll describe each of the features that can be enabled, disabled or changed in camera settings. It might be a bit boring to read though.

VMODE (Video Mode)

Here you can choose video resolution according to the video format (Setup>VFMT) you selected. Frames per second (FPS) can be changed to PAL or NTSC video system (Setup>Config>V.SYS).

If you selected MP4, following resolutions are available :

  • MP4: PS: 1920 x 1080 60 p / 50 p
  • MP4 HQ: 1920 x 1080 30 p / 25 p
  • MP4 HS120 (HS100):1280 x 720 120 p / 100 p
  • MP4 HS240 (HS200): 800 x 480 240 p / 200 p
  • MP4 STD: 1280 x 720 30 p / 25 p

If you selected XAVC S, following resolutions are available :

  • XAVC S 120 p: 1920 x 1080 120 p / 100 p
  • XAVC S 240 p: 1280 x 720 240 p / 200 p
  • XAVC S 24 p: 1920 x 1080 24 p
  • XAVC S 30 p: 1920 x 1080 30 p / 25 p
  • XAVC S 4K 24 p: 3840 x 2160 24 p
  • XAVC S 4K 30 p: 3840 x 2160 30 p / 25 p
  • XAVC S 60 p: 1920 x 1080 60 p / 50 p
VFMT (Video Format)

As previously stated, depending on the video format you’ve chosen, different resolutions are available. You can choose from :

Xavc S is special format introduced by Sony, and in order to use it you’ll have to use a high-speed memory card. More on this in “Storage” section of the article.

If you wish to turn the video SteadyShoot stabilization on or off, you can do it here (Setup>Steady). Understand that this will reduce the video angle to 120°, even if 170° angle is selected.

If you do not wish to record the sound, you can turn it on/off.

This function eliminates cuts low-range wind noise when recording using the built-in microphone.

My strong recommendation is that unless you plan to color-correct photos and videos in post-production, you use vivid colors.

Yet another wired and at first though quite confusing abbreviation Lopt – loop recording time.

  • 5, 20, 60, 120, unlimited.

For better understanding of the intervals and how they work, check page 48 of the online user-guide here.

Even though it sounds like a dash camera function, drive mode is where you can choose from three different still image recording options.

  • Single – takes single still image
  • Burst – takes multiple images continuously
  • Mshoot (Motion shoot) – creates a photo from still images continuously shot at selected intervals.

This option can only be activated when burst or mshoot are selected. It enables you to select different intervals for those modes.

  • 10f 1s: – captures 10 images in a second. (10 frames per second)
  • 5f 2s – captures 10 images in 2 seconds, or five per second
  • 2f 5S – captures 10 photos in 5 seconds, two per second.

If you like taking group images or selfies, self-timer is great option for you. Self timer will create a delay in triggering the shutter button in interval you specified. Sony’s 4K camera allows only two intervals for self-timer – 2 and 10 seconds.

If you are not a huge fan of a wide-angle view, you can reduce the angle to 120°.

This function allows you to select the interval for interval mode (ITVL).

If you attached your Sony FDR-X1000VR upside down, you can still get normal photo/video output, just make sure to turn “flip” function on.

There are two options that can influence your image quality, depending in situation you’re recording :

I always used normal while testing the  camera out, as I did not test it underwater. One thing though, if you set scene to “underwater” you can’t change the white balance (Setup>WB).

White balance can be switched from :

  • AWB – adjusts white balance automatically
  • CTEMP – select white balance according to light source 2500k-9900k
  • CUSTM – custom (uses the settings selected in CSET)
  • CSET – custom settings (determines light source automatically)

CSET : Place a white reference object under the same lighting conditions as the subject anpress the REC/ENTER button. (source – user manual)

Example of few white balance functions and how it can change the temperature of the photo (giving warm or cooler colors)
Exposure Value
Exposure tweaks can make your image look brighter or darker, just make sure not to go crazy or you’ll end up with over or underexposed images.

Reset returns all the settings to default. This is good when you mess something up and can’t remember what it is that you did.

Configuration is another sub-section of the setup. It contains more generic settings that don’t have anything to do with video, audio or photo. Here is their brief overview, for more info, check the manual.

  • WiFi – WiFi can be turned on/off by holding prev and next buttons at the same time or going into Setup>Confing>WiFi. Great feature that this camera supports is connecting to multiple cameras via the WiFi, in that case select Multi.
  • GPS – Turns GPS on or off, for tracking your camera. More on Global Positioning System cam be found on page 105 of an online manual.
  • Plane – airplane mode, turns GPS, WiFi and IR off/on, useful when you do not need those features but want to save a bit of battery.-
  • TC/UB displays time-code or user bits.
  • IR-RC – turn this on if you use Live-Remote controller.
  • HDMI – turn it on if you want to preview footage on your TV via HDMI cable.
  • A OFF – Auto power off.
  • Beep – turn menu beep sound on/off.
  • Date – specify the date/time.
  • DST – Daylight Saving Time
  • LANG – select the language
  • V SYS – select PAL or NTSC video system (affects the FPS)
  • Ver – firmware/software version of your camera
  • Format – erases an entire memory card
  • Reset – resets all settings to default

User interface and navigation

My overall user experience with Sony’s camera hasn’t changed with the new 4K model. While the navigation is simple, changing options and going through the menu requires tons of reading and practice. In my personal opinion, user interface is cluttered and not clear enough.

It requires tons of reading to understand all the options (and there aren’t many of them). I also do not like unclear naming and abbreviations used. Even though I owned 2 Sony’s cameras previously, I had to go back and read the manual for a while before figuring everything out.

Of course, you won’t need to change options as frequently as I had, but you’ll need a bit of practice to get used to the options. I really think that Sony should improve user interface with their next camera.

Battery performance

Sony 4K action camera supports following memory cards :

  • Memory Stick Micro™ (M2) and
  • Micro SD / SDHC / SDXC Memory Card(class 4 or higher) memory cards.

Recommended memory cards

Be advised that if you want to get maximum mbs speed in 4K which is around 100mbs, you’ll need fast memory card that can handle such speed. SDXC/SDHC memory card (UHS-I U3 or higher) is recommended by Sony.

Overall Sony’s  FDR-x1000v is quite good action camera. It’s very well-built, does more than good job in terms of video, photo and audio quality. I particularly liked it’s shape and great WiFi app which not only allows you to import footage to your phone directly, but also allows you to remotely control the camera itself.

Speaking of controlling the camera, perhaps the most amazing thing about it is how well and hale-free it works in combination with live-view remote control. With all of its pros, there are few disadvantages that I noticed while testing this camera.

First and foremost this is not entry level action cam. It’s quite pricey and if you’re main purpose is to use it on a holiday or family gatherings, you should consider something way more affordable.

The most frustrating thing about the FDR-X1000V is its unbelievably cluttered user interface. Camera menu is awfully made and it takes quite a lot of time to understand all the abbreviated options that camera offers.

Finally, even  though I had limited time to test this camera that I borrowed from  a friend of mine, I feel comfortable recommending it. From my point of view, this one is perfect for true adrenaline-junkies who need something reliable, well-supported and compact that can shoot videos in true 4K.

SJCAM SJ5000X Elite Action Camera Review

SJ5000x  Elite is a WiFi, sports camera made by SJCAM. It’s a fifth camera from SJ5000 series. What makes it different compared to other models is that it is the first one to implement Sony’s IMX078CQK 12 megapixels image sensor.

SJ5000X Elite is the first SJCAM model with Sony Sensor inside.

Other important hardware components are Novatek NTK96660 processor or chip and a 7 glass, wide angle lens. Besides that, it is powered by standard 900mah Li-Ion battery and can support maximum of 32GB of external memory (though in my tests it worked with 64GB cards as well).

Oh, I nearly forgot. It has a 2″ screen at the back.

Without any doubt, SJ5000x Elite looks great on a paper. It is actually the first SJCAM camera after SJ4000 that got me so excited. Let’s be honest, their previous models like SJ4000+, M10+ and even 5000X ( difference between 5000x vs 5000x elite) were a total flop.

I was quite harsh in my reviews on those models, and I still think those were heavily overpriced and over-hyped products that offered less bang for the buck compared to competitors.

Can 5000x Elite be a camera that will bring this Chinese brand back to life, or will it put one last nail in the coffin?

You are probably here because you want to find out how the camera performs and does it justify the cost? Or should you choose another brand instead?

No worries, I got you covered.

I’ve been using this camera for quite a while now and I am locked and loaded to tell you everything. We certainly have lots of things to cover here, so allow me to begin with most basic stuff, such as product overview and specs. Later on, I will test its video, photo and audio quality together with usability and support.

SJCAM 5000x Elite specification

5000x Elite unboxing

Two previously released models SJ4000+ and M10+ had quite high quality packing. However, for some unknown reason, SJ5000X Elite arrives in a pretty simple-looking cardboard box that looks nowhere as cool as those prior to it.  It’s obvious that two predecessors models had much better protection.

Now, I can only guess why the Elite packing is designed and made to look like this. First is obviously to decrease the production cost and the other might be the visibility.

With this kind of “opened” packing design, camera is better visible on the shelves of a  brick and mortar stores.

Awkward thing is that on a box there is no “Elite” sign, it only says 5000X, so one’s might confuse it with that model.  Accessories are not organized well either, everything is just stuffed into a box.

Not a huge deal, since you will not record your movies with a box, but I thought to cover product packing as protection as well. Like with all cameras after the M10, this one has a safety code which you can scratch and enter on their official site to see verify the authenticity of your cam.

There is a huge list of gadgets that come with the camera.

  • 1x camera
  • 1x waterproof housing (30m waterproof)
  • 3x bandage
  • 2x 3m self adhesive tape
  • 1x USB cable
  • 3x switch mount
  • 1x bracket for mounting on a 1/4″ screw
  • 1x flat base
  • 1x curved base
  • 1x J shaped mount
  • 1x bicycle mount
  • 1x cleaning cloth
  • 1x base mount
  • 1x spare back door (not waterproof)
  • 1x manual
  • 2x SJCAM stickers
  • 1x lens cap (for protecting lens)
List of all accessories that arrive with 5000x Elite camera.

As you see, camera comes with a lots of additional accessories. Gear is pretty much the same as any other Chinese camera. The only thing they included compared to earlier model is a lens cap. This is a nice additional protector for your 5000x Elite lens. I know its probably the cheapest of all, but its quite handy. Some other cameras that included lens cap in a box were Firefly 6S and Git 1.

There is no wall charger included, so you will have to buy one separately. Camera can be charged by plugging supplied USB cable into a PC or a power-bank.

Manual that arrives with Elite, is literary copy/pasted from all previous models with only few technical things changed. It does not provide much information on settings and features. That’s why I recommend you to take a look at our own SJ4000 manual. Because of the similarities in most of the options, it will help you understand technicalities.

Besides these standard mounts and accessories, there are also few pieces of additional gear that can be bought separately on manufacturers website or through plenty other online shops. Good news is that camera is compatible with all standard SJCAM accessories. And if you want to see which additional accessories I recommend, you can read this SJ4000 accessories list.

Design and built quality

Design-wise Elite is similar to any other SJCAM camera. What makes it slightly different compared to most of the manufacturer’s models is a 2″ LCD display at the back. I found display of this size just about right for previewing videos and photos that I captured and also for live-view recording. It helps a lot especially with video and photo composition.

On the side, there are three buttons. Two up and down arrows, used for menu navigation and also zooming in and out. (digital zoom, not optical). Third button is a WiFi and a gyro shortcut. When you press it, camera’s WiFi will be enabled. However if you hold it for over 2 seconds, it will turn gyro video stabilization on or off. Stabilization can be switched from on to off even when you are recording.

What bugged me about the buttons is that they are so tiny and to close to each other. Even though my hands nor fingers aren’t huge, I found it a bit cumbersome to navigate through the menu while pressing them. In my previous review of M10+ model I said that that one can be operated with one hand, well this one certainly can not. I always had to use the other hand to hold the camera firmly.

Other side of the camera has 2 ports (USB and HDMI) and one slot for memory card.

Additionally, it has 2 led indicators at front. Those two, alongside the one of the top and one of the bank blink blue when the camera is recording. The other one at the back will be red while the camera is charging. When it turns of you will now that the 5000x Elite is fully charged.

What I really did not like was the battery cover. I still can’t believe that it is made so flimsy and hard to open and close. That would be okay if this was their first model that had this very same issue, but as the matter a fact, if I am not mistaken, this is their 6th camera with exact same issue.

On the bright side, camera is available in 7 different colors, so if you are picky about coloring, I am sure you will find one to match your preference.  I got the black one because its neutral and looks more serious compared to pink or yellow.

Camera is made out of plastic and has patterned edges. It’s built in the same way like most of the cameras from the brand. Even though its light-weight, I really had no feeling that I am holding a well crafted product. If you need something quite compact and better built, you might take a look at Dazzne P3 or Git 1 or Git 2.

Weight and size.

The total weight of SJCAM SJ5000X Elite camera is XYZ grams with and without the battery. It has absolutely the same size as its predecessors. Dimensions of 5000X Elite are 59.27*41.13*29.28mm.

Video quality

Even though on few forums I’ve seen people complaining about video color looking unnatural, I can tell you that personally I am satisfied with the way Sony’s sensor handles colors. Perhaps those people were referring to earlier software versions.

Images below are extracted video frames  in 1920 x 1080 resolution.

1920×1080 frame extracted from video.

I had some complains about sharpness with the previous model – SJCAM M10+, but 5000x Elite creates quite sharp video.

Video samples

If you would like to download video samples and preview them on your own PC (which is highly recommended), you can download original files on this link.

Here is a video uploaded on YouTube.

Image quality

The biggest novelty of 5000X Elite is that has Sony’s IMX078 image sensor. This means that the camera captures still images in true 12 megapixels. For the similar price range, their predecessors M10+ and SJ4000+ had only 4mp photo resolution.

Even though initial firmware that I used 1.22 had problems with bleached out colors, I was quite satisfied with the results after the upgrade to latest software version. Colors are quite natural looking in my opinion.

Camera handles the details quite when, and you will see in the next few samples.

Audio quality

Even before I received my 5000x Elite, there were rumors that the microphone quality is terrible. Once I received my unit and tested it through various firmare upgrades, I can confirm that the audio quality is really bad. Not only that the sound is muffled on the unit I got, but it is also quite low.

The reason I’ve been prolonging the review of this model (It took me 3 months to write it down) is because I was really hoping that sound can be boosted in software upgrade. However, despite SJCAM clamming otherwise, I do believe that it’s a poor quality hardware inside which causes sound to be this bad.

The quality of the sound can be compared to some other cameras when they are in a waterproof housing.

When the camera is in a waterproof housing you can’t hear sound at all, especially due to low-level microphone which SJCAM 5000X Elite uses.

Note : Manufacturer confirmed that first few batches of the 5000X Elite have sound issue, so I can’t really talk about other “batches”, from what I have here, if sound matters to you, avoid 5000X Elite by all means necessary.

SJCAM 5000X Elite camera operates in 3 main modes :

  • Video / Photo
  • Video Lapse
  • Slow rec
  • Photo Lapse
  • Burst Mode
  • Long Exposure
  • Underwater
  • TV-Out
  • Motion Detection
  • Car Mode
  • Playback
  • Settings

This mode has multiple sub-modes. There are 6 main sub-modes. My overall impression is that SJCAM over-killed the camera with so many options that will rather confuse than help.

Below, I will try to explain each of these, so bear with me.

I warn you that this is extremely dull part of the article. Especially because most of these features haven’t changed in years. They are the same in most of Chinese cameras. There are few new options that this camera has, and I paid special attention to them.

I was bored to death writing it, but it helps newbies and action camera owners, so it had to be done. You can skip it if you wish, unfortunately I couldn’t.

User interface and menu overview are organized completely differently.

Returns you to a video mode where you can record movies or capture still images.

TV Out

For previewing videos and photos on your PC, you need to enable this option and get an HDMI cable like this one. Plug the narrower end of the  cable into camera HDMI port and wider one into your TV (make sure your TV supports HDMI, very old TV’s do not have this port).

Video and Photo Lapse

I really like that camera has both video and photo time lapse features. If you are a beginner and do not like to use video editing software, choose video-lapse and camera will create right out of the box ready video, that you can upload on YouTube right away.

For those advanced users who like color-correction and other stuff, use photo lapse, and camera will create bunch of photographs (1 photo represents 1 frame of a video). Import those into your editing software and everything else it up to you.

Intervals are a bit different for some reason.

  • 1/2/5/10/30/60 seconds  – Video Lapse
  • 2/5/10/20 seconds – Photo Lapse

Just to explain, if you choose 2 seconds, this means that camera captures image every other second. So if you leave your camera for a 100 minutes to record, you will have 1200 photos ( 6000 seconds /2 = 3000 photos. Each photo is 1 video frame, so if you want your video in 30fps, you will have time lapse video length or 3000/30 = 100 seconds).

There are two options to preview the videos and photos. Except exporting and previewing on your computer, you can either view them from App, camera itself or on your TV.

Be aware that if you are using 64GB memory card (camera officially supports 32gb, but I used Sony 64GB Class 10), you will not be able to preview videos.

The most extensive sub-menu is the Setup which contains insane amount of options that you can adjust.

  • “4k” – 24 fps – 2860 x 2160 – interpolated, not true UHD 4K.
  • 2k – 30 fps – 2560 x 1440
  • 1080p -30/60fps – 1920 x 1080
  • 720p – 30/60/120 fps – 1280 x 720
  • VGA – 240 fps – 640 x 480
Loop recording

FOV, or field of view is very interesting feature. Since some people do not like the wide-angle lens, since it creates distortion, you can choose the angle you like the most. Be aware that camera scales the video image, which means that the video might not be as sharp. Similar to situation with a gyro sensor.

  • 170°
  • 140°
  • 110°
  • 70°
  • off (default)

WDR or wide dynamic range is an option used in situations where you have a lots of contrasts.

Gyro sensor

Even though most people believe that a gyro is software part that stabilizes the video, it is actually a tiny chip (hardware) which eliminates shakiness from the videos. Stabilization of this kind is similar to digital stabilization. This option does excellent job in stabilizing when camera is moved up and down, but does not work when you move it from one side to another. However this is without any doubt huge advantage of this camera.

It is advised that you turn gyro off when taking photographs, because it will reduce image sharpness. WiFi button located on the camera’s side is at the same time a shortcut for turning video stabilization on or off. If you hold it for 2 seconds you will turn on/off gyro. Great thing is that this shortcut allows you to switch through gyro on and off while recording.

Motion detection

Until this day I do not understand why this feature is in an action camera. In theory, when turned on,  camera will start recording when detects a motion. But for any sort of serious home surveillance, do yourself a favor and get a proper home-surveillance camera.

Audio and volume

If by any chance you wish to turn the sound off for your videos you can do that. Additionally you can set up audio levels from 1-8, one being the lowest and eight the highest.

  • on/off audio
  • volume – 1-10 levels
Slow motion

One very interesting option is called slow motion. This feature will create out of box slowed down video, without you having to edit it further. Quite handy for people who are unfamiliar with video editing software, but need slow motion scenes.

Slow motion feature creates right out of the box slow mo video without any editing in needed.
Video file format

Camera gives you the option to choose between two formats. Quite honestly, I did not quite get what’s the point of this, but I am sure there is one. I use MOV format.

Image size

Under the image size, you can navigate through different photo resolutions. Of course, it’s highly recommended to use highest one, unless you want to save a bit more space on your memory card, in that case you can use lower resolution and sacrifice image quality.

  • 12 mp
  • 10mp
  • 8mp
  • 5mp
  • 3mp
  • 2mhd
  • 1.3mp
  • vga 640×480

I use standard.

I set mine to normal.

White Balance
  • Auto
  • Daylight
  • Cloudy
  • Tungsten
  • Fluorescent

It really depends on light, environment and the effect you wish to achieve. In a bright sunny day, I found that daylight has the most vivid colors. For most of my video samples I used auto white balance. There is no general rule when it comes to this one.

This is white balance test conducted on one of the 1.2.2 firmware. Luckily the 1.2.3 version fixed the bleached out colors. So if you are having the issue with colors, make sure to update to latest software version by following instructions in “Firmware update” headline of this article.White balance on 1.2.3 firmware. Colors are very neatly looking and improved significantly compared to earlier version.

This feature is one of my favorite. It allows you to have photos and videos in black and white and sepia. Warm color adds slightly more vibrancy, but nothing significant.

  • Normal
  • Black and White
  • Retro (sepia)
  • Warm
  • Cool

If you do not want to bother with how much light goes into the sensor, just leave ISO to off. It’s not an option you will use quite a lot, as camera is pretty good on detecting this parameter automatically.

EV, or exposure value determines how bright or dark your video or photo will be. I mostly kept mine at 0.0, but I encourage you to experiment with this option, as it really depends on a situation and light conditions.

Besides standard JPEG image format, SJCAM 5000X Elite can export images as RAW. I talked about RAW in my Gitup GIT2 review. Please check the “RAW” paragraph out, as it clarifies what is RAW, who should use it and what are its benefits.

Burst mode

When you enable the burst mode, camera will capture up to 10 photos on a single shutter click. Useful for sports photography and fast-moving objects.

Dash cam

I always encourage people whose main interest is to capture a traffic with an action camera, mostly because action cameras are not made for that purpose. However if you want to record traffic from time to time with camera attached to a car charger, enabling this option will turn the camera off, when you turn your car off, and vice-versa. Use it in combination with loop recording.

Other options

Below is a brief overview on other options, that are pretty self-explanatory, but I covered them as well.

  • License no set – if you wish to have a custom name on datestamp, for instance in right  corner, etc.
  • date/time – set date/time
  • auto power off – activate if you want camera to turn off after selected period of inactivity – good for saving up the battery
  • keypad tone – turn the keypad tone on or off
  • light set – (off – turns all LED indicators off, 1 turns on only top indicator, 2 turns front ant top, 3 turns all indicators on)
  • screen savers -set the screen to turn off after inactivity – good for battery saving
  • frequency – refresh rate for your screen
  • Logo watermark – show SJCAM logo on your videos and photos or turn it off
  • Language – select the menu language (17 different languages available)
  • WiFi SSID – camera WiFi name
  • WiFi Password – WiFi password, default is : 12345678
  • Delete – enters delete mode so you can remove images or videos you do not like
  • Format – formats the memory card, erases everything.
  • Default settings – returns all options on default
  • Version – shows firmware/software version

Other technical stuff

Due to many questions that regularly occur on all SJCAM reviews, I created two paragraphs that will respond to ones most commonly asked. Once again, if your problem is quite specific, it is the best to reach out to manufacturer directly.

How to update the firmware?

There you have it. First of all, I’d like to apologize to all the readers who have restlessly emailed me and ask “when 5000x elite review will be done”. It’s taken me longer than usual, mostly because tons of software updates SJCAM did. I waited until they had a stable software. I hope that this review of mine helped you decide if SJCAM SJ5000X Elite is good enough camera for you.

At the end, let’s summarize the things I personally liked, but also the ones I did not.

SJCAM 5000X Elite is certainly way better camera compared to M10+ and SJ4000+ I recently reviewed. It provides better bang for the buck. Positive thing is that SJCAM finally started using serious image sensor components in their models.

New Sony’s sensor might not be that good in low-light, but it creates quite sharp 12 megapixels images. Colors on both video and photo are quite natural for my taste. Accessories that arrive with the camera are quite standard for all SJCAM models. Nothing new when it comes to equipment.

New features like slow motion, long-exposure and underwater mode are things I really like. My overall opinion is that video stabilization has to be better optimized and I expect that to happen in the next firmware update.

Sound is huge problem with 5000X Elite. Not only that it’s quite low, but you will barely be able to hear anything (at least that was a case with my camera) until you set up volume level at 10. Even then, the sound is inferior compared to some most cameras  I tested, especially Gitup Git 2 or Xiaomi’s YI. Additionally, unlike some of it’s competitors, it does not support external microphone. As already mentioned, you can barely hear a person speaking

User navigation is a bit confusing, there are tons of options and setups. It took me a while to get used to new menu design, especially since it has been modified with each software update. Good news, is that camera works quite fast and there were no issues with it’s performance.

While the design is quite standard, I believe it’s high time that SJCAM starts making higher-quality and better-built cameras. Camera is light-weight, but feels quite fragile, even though I did not have problems breaking anything while using it in different conditions.

Finally, only if sound is not in your priority list, there is a point in getting 5000X Elite by SJCAM. If the microphone inside was better, this would have been quite decent camera for the money, but with sound level being terrible, it will be a deal breaker for many people.
