Palit GTX 970 JetStream 4 GB Review

15 Packaging & Contents » The GeForce GTX 970 is the smaller brother to NVIDIA's new GeForce GTX 980, of which both are based on the Maxwell architecture using the GM204 graphics processor. The GTX 970, much like its predecessors, the GTX 770 and GTX 670, is destined to be an underrated card decking out lower shelves under the GTX 980's shadow. Steam Hardware survey trends would also agree with our guess that this card will end up selling more between the two in volume, probably even fetching NVIDIA more revenue. The GeForce GTX 970 is carved out of the 28 nm GM204 silicon on which the GTX 980 is based, by disabling three of sixteen streaming multiprocessors with, each, 128 CUDA cores. The resulting shader count is 1,664. Texture memory units are, proportionately, down to 104, as are clock speeds, although they stay well above the 1 GHz mark. The ROP count stays at a whopping 64, with a 256-bit memory bus width and a standard memory total of 4 GB.

Today, we're reviewing the Palit GeForce GTX 970 JetStream, a non-reference design, factory-overclocked GTX 970 graphics card with a custom-designed PCB. Palit's dual-fan cooler will stop both fans while the card is idle and running light gaming tasks. According to Palit, the card will retail for $345. Palit GeForce GTX 970 Jetstream review

Palit is back in da house as we review their GeForce GTX 970 Jetstream edition. The product comes factory overclocked with an impressive boost clock of 1304 MHz. The product has a custom and rather small PCB, it's the Jetsream cooler that makes it lengthy in a more regular fashion. Talking about that Jetstream cooler, Palit had a mission, and it was to make the product as silent as possible, that they certainly achieved. The card has 4 GB graphics memory, is energy efficient and comes factory overclocked for you. 

The PC market is interesting, it has been on a decline for sure, but here at Guru3D.com we've noticed an opposite trend, gaming PCs are getting more and more popular, much like an American muscle car or should we say card. We all want a beast of a gaming rig as, let’s face it, PC gaming as an experience is just so much better than anything else out there. Roughly a year and a half ago it became apparent that Nvidia was brewing a new GPU architecture under codename Maxwell, yes, named after the mathematical physicist. The Maxwell family of GPUs is actually the 10th generation of GPU architecture for Nvidia. With several design goals in mind (higher performance and lower power consumption) Nvidia was hoping to reach 20nm by the time their high-end product would be released. It is now September 2014 and it is abundantly clear that the 20nm nodes are not yet viable for volume production of wafers with huge transistor counts. So Nvidia pretty much had to go with plan B and stuck with 28nm, this makes their silicon sizable, in relative proportions of course. None the less, Nvidia has moved forward and today the 2nd Maxwell based products (GTX 750 was actually the first trial) are being released as GM204 based GPUs. Yes, correct, GM204 and not GM210, meaning Nvidia is once again using the ‘high-end’ and not ‘enthusiast class’ chip to empower the product series we are about to review. Armed with voltage, power and load limiters Nvidia these days can harvest massive performance out of chips when you think about it. They did the very same with Kepler really, GK104 versus GK110 anyone? So Nvidia certainly is doing something right. Today is testimony to that as we see two products performing in the GTX 780 Ti range of performance, but both will consume much less power. That’s actually a primary feature design target for Maxwell, more performance with less power consumption. The GPU used thus is the 28nm GM204, the two derivatives created from it are the GeForce GTX 970 and 980. Ah, you noticed? Yes, correct, Nvidia decided to skip the 800 series to avoid confusion with some of their rebranded mobile parts. Maxwell is a new and sound architecture and as such it is released with a new series name. In this article we will have an extensive look at the architecture behind Maxwell, we will look at gaming performance from Full HD to Ultra HD, we will look at power and thermal characteristics and will serve you that on a silver platter with a nice photo-shoot here at Guru3D.com of course. 

In this review we will look at the Jetstream edition GeForce GTX 970 from Palit. With a custom PCB, all dark/golden design and the Jetstream cooler the GTX 970 will get all the cooling it needs. While temps stick at a roughly 75 Degrees C, the noise levels are incredibly low. In fact in idle or desktop mode, the fans won't even spin until they reach 67 Degrees C. And how does a 1152 MHz core GPU clock frequency with a 1304 MHz Boost frequency sound eh?  

Check 'r out as with an etail price of 325 EURO this is one of the more affordable models available on the market as well.

15 Value & Conclusion » Idle temperatures are fine, even with the card cooling itself passively in idle. Gaming also sees temperatures below NVIDIA's 80°C temperature limit, although not by much. Clocks will be reduced slightly, but never below the base clock, if the card gets any hotter than the limit. Our graph further down the page details the card's clock distribution. I'm a bit surprised that Palit's triple-slot cooler did not do much better here; it is noisier than competing dual-slot coolers and runs higher temperatures.

Modern graphics cards have several clock profiles that are selected to balance power draw and performance requirements. The card uses NVIDIA's dynamic overclocking mechanism, GPU Boost 2.0. It will dynamically adjust clock and voltage based on render load, temperature, and other factors. For the graph below, we recorded all GPU clock and GPU voltage combinations of our 1920x1080 resolution benchmarking suite. The plotted points are transparent, which allows them to add up to indicate more often used values. A light color means the clock/voltage combination is rarely used and a dark color means it's active a lot.

Palit GTX970 JetStream OC Review

Nvidia launched their new GTX970 and GTX980 solutions last week, and there is no doubt that they have pushed the ‘performance to watt’ ratio to a new level. We have already reviewed the reference GTX980, the ASUS StriX GTX970 and the MSI GTX970 Gaming 4G. Today we look at the Palit GTX970 JetStream which actually features the highest overclock of them all- out of the box.

The Palit GTX970 Jetstream ships with a gold and black cooler. Gold is a colour that generally doesn’t appeal to European tech readers, however the Far East readers seem to find it more appealing. I think it looks fine, but it does pale in comparison next to the beautiful MSI GTX970 Gaming 4G.

Even though we have a handful of reviews already published, Nvidia’s Maxwell architecture deserves a little discussion before we get into testing the Palit GTX970. If you are a regular reader of KitGuru then you will already have studied our multiple analysis of the lower level GTX750Ti solution throughout the year.

The GTX750ti has been one of the most exciting cards that Nvidia have released in recent years – performance is close to the HD7850 while consuming half the power at the socket – and all without the need for a PCIe power cable. It produces such a modest heat emission that the Asus GTX750Ti Strix OC we reviewed recently didn’t need to spin the fans most of the time, even when gaming.

The Maxwell architecture has been designed to deliver twice the performance per watt of previous generation Geforce hardware. It sounds easy enough on paper to achieve, but the real world challenges for Nvidia have been complex.

The new GM204 GPU is very efficient. The Maxwell SM has been rebalanced so that the CUDA cores are fully utilised more often. Doing so saves power and enhances overall performance. The L2 cache size in the GM204 is 2MB, or four times larger than the GK104. The addition of extra cache means that fewer requests to the GPU memory are needed – again reducing power consumption and pushing more performance.

The Geforce GTX 970 is equipped with 7Gbps memory. Those of you with higher resolution monitors, or running in a multi screen configuration will also be pleased to hear that there is 4GB of GDDR5 memory on the card, not 3GB – this memory will push 224 GB/s sec. Nvidia have added a new compression engine to reduce the demand on DRAM bandwidth.

The Palit GTX970 JetStream OC has received a core clock enhancement to 1,152mhz, from 1,050mhz on the reference design. The GDDR5 memory remains untouched, as we would expect – its certainly not going to be a bottleneck.
