Обзор Kobo Aura One - Выбросьте свой Kindle и купите Aura One

Kobo Aura One —

Kobo Aura One

11 cases for Kobo Aura One and Aura Edition 2

If you buy an item via this post, we may get a small affiliate fee. Details.

Besides original cases for Kobo Aura One and Edition 2, you’ll find below a couple of good alternatives from other producers.

New Aura e-readers were announced by Kobo in August 2016. The number of compatible cases is much smaller than for Kindle (as always). If you want to find out what’s available on the market, make sure to explore this list.

Let’s first go quickly through the e-readers. Kobo Aura One is a waterproof 7.8-inch e-reader designed from scratch. It has the highest waterproof level among e-readers (IPX8) and has a built-in solution for borrowing ebooks from public libraries.

A cheaper option is Kobo Aura Edition 2. It’s a refreshed model from 2013. For this price, you’ll get the front lighted screen, and 4 GB of internal memory.

Don’t expect thousands of covers for Kobo Aura 2016 e-readers. Hundreds? No. Dozens? Yes. That’s why it’s good to explore universal e-reader cases or covers for devices with comparable dimensions and proportions.

Kobo Aura Edition 2 has the similar size as Kobo Glo HD, so if you find a case for Glo that features corner straps (or a sleeve), you can also successfully use it for the Edition 2.

Model Inches Millimeters
Kobo Aura Edition 2 6.7 × 4.45 × 0.33 159 × 113 × 8.50
Kobo Aura One 7.7 × 5.45 × 0.27 195 × 139 × 6.90

Kobo Aura 2016 case – recommended sites

And the last thing before the list. If you want to keep searching the web for the perfect Kobo case, make sure to visit the following sites.

Amazon – the giant online store offers the largest selection of all kinds of Kobo cases and accessories, including the original ones from Kobo. There are thousands of results for a search phrase “Kobo case.”

eBay – on eBay you can find many cases that are exactly made to fit a specific Kobo model, or are universal e-reader cases. They are unbranded, and that means you’ll be able to buy them for a lower – sometimes much lower – price.

Rakuten – while Amazon and eBay are obvious choices, there are also other sites to explore. One of them is Rakuten, an online store having the same owner as Kobo ebookstore.

Chapters Indigo – while the availability of original cases is limited on a Kobo website, you’ll find them all on Chapters Indigo. Plus, some of the accessories are actually cheaper than on Kobo website.

Etsy – a top destination for vintage and handmade items, art, and supplies. There are sleeves made from a natural cotton, or customized felt covers, or jackets made from a genuine leather – the number of available items is endless!

If you want to add any item to the list, please leave your suggestion in the comments. You can share pictures, too.

Snuff out your Kindle. Kobo's Aura One is a bookworm's new best friend

“Kobo’s Aura One is the best ebook reader you can buy.”
  • Big screen is sharp and crisp
  • Supports any ebook format
  • Long battery life
  • Night mode eliminates blue light
  • Waterproof
  • No page turning buttons
  • Pricey

Amazon may rule the ebook reader market in the U.S. with an iron Kindle, but in the rest of the world, digital bookworms turn to Kobo’s ebook readers. It’s been a few years since Kobo introduced its high-end, waterproof Kobo Aura h3O, but now the company is back with its best ebook reader yet: the Aura One.

Measuring 7.8 inches diagonally, it’s the largest ebook reader ever made, but it’s also shockingly slim and lightweight. With its $230 price tag, the Aura One is directly competing with Amazon’s $290 Oasis, which won our Editor’s Choice Award for its cutting-edge design and epic reading experience.

Does the Aura One have what it takes to defeat Amazon’s innovative Oasis? We binge read Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (and a few more books) to find out.

It’s one of the biggest ebook readers ever made

Most ebook readers look exactly the same: They’re chunky, rubbery, 6-inch slabs with E Ink screens. Kobo’s Aura One looks completely different. Gone are the thick bezels and deeply inset screen, replaced by a flat face of sturdy matte glass, thin sides, and a back made of grippy, basketball-like plastic. The power button adds a pop of blue on the back, and there’s a Micro USB port on the bottom for charging.

The minimal profile and buttoned-down design all but insist you slip them in your carry-on.

It’s waterproof design and IPX8 rating means it can go under 6 feet of water for 60 minutes. You can drop the Aura One right into the bathtub if you want and nothing bad will happen to it. You can take it to the beach or pool and get it soaking wet, and it’ll be fine. Waterproofing is a huge deal. It sets the Kobo Aura One ahead of the Kindle Oasis, which still lacks waterproofing after all these years. People like to read near water, so protection against water damage is an absolute necessity. After all, the only thing worse than dropping your favorite book in the lake and having to dry the wrinkled pages is dropping your $300 ebook reader in the same lake and having to replace it.

The Aura One is not as daring as Amazon’s asymmetrical Kindle Oasis with its unique leather battery case, but it’s very sleek and attractive. The giant 7.8-inch Carta E Ink HD touchscreen makes it one of the biggest ebook readers ever made, but it still has the same 300 pixel-per-inch resolution as high-end Kindles, so the words on the page appear as crisp and clear as they do in print.

The larger screen mimics the full-page experience you’d have with a hardcover book. You get more words on each page, even when you crank up the font to an enormous size that would lead to lots of page flipping on a 6-inch reader. Anyone who normally needs reading glasses will love this feature, and even if you don’t, you’ll appreciate the big screen. The first book I read on the Kobo was a stage play with lots of white space on each page, along with stage directions, and the screen made it much easier to read.

Despite its size, I had no problem reading one-handed on the subway with the Aura, though two hands are best. I did miss having page-turn buttons, which I had gotten used to after using the Kindle Oasis for the past few months. Swiping the screen to turn the page will be intuitive enough to anyone with a smartphone, but hard buttons would feel better.

The Aura’ screen is similar in size to the iPad Mini, but it’s much slimmer and lighter. There’s no glare outdoors or at night, either. It’s a better reading experience all around.

Kobo’s night mode diminishes the amount of blue light that the screen emits, so you can relax with a good book in bed without the sleep-disrupting effect of normal screens. While many phones and tablets have this feature now, the Aura One is the first ebook reader to do it. You simply tap on the sun icon that represents brightness, and you’ll find the option to adjust screen temperature under Natural Light. It casts a warm orange glow that’s so pleasant, I prefer it to the standard auto setting. The lighting will also adjust automatically to suit the room you’re in, if you don’t want to adjust it yourself.

Typical ebook reader software

Most ebook readers have a similar look and feel in terms of software. There’s a home page where you can see the book you’re currently reading, your reading stats, recommendations, and more. The options to read, browse, or view your activity are on the bottom of the screen. Quick settings for lighting, Wi-Fi, and battery are right up top along with three dots, which expand to reveal more info and the option to see your full settings menu. Inside Settings, you’ll find a number of options to customize your reading experience.

As extras, Kobo lets you post quotes and passages directly to Facebook, highlight passages, get definitions, take notes, and place bookmarks while you’re reading.

Easy reading with wide support for ebook formats

Beneath all that glass, Kobo’s Aura One is on par with the latest Kindles. Its 1GHz processor is reasonably speedy and power efficient. All ebook readers have a minor page-turn lag, but the Aura One is as speedy as the best of them.

Kobo’s ebook readers are more open and support a number of ebook formats.

The Aura One packs 8GB of storage onboard, which should be enough to hold about 6,000 ebooks. Kobo readers are more open than Kindles, and support formats including EPUB, MOBI, PDF, TXT, HTML, RTF, and more. That means you can easily transfer most of the ebooks you’ve bought onto your Kobo ebook reader. Those of you who have Google Play libraries or love to read ebooks from sites like Project Gutenberg are in luck. Most of those are in supported formats. Your CBZ and CBR comic books will cross over, too.

If you have Kindle or iBooks content, you’re less fortunate. Apple and Amazon lock you into their ecosystems, so you’ll need to break the DRM on those files to convert them, which isn’t for amateurs. If you’re heavily invested in Amazon’s ecosystem, just buy the Kindle Oasis instead.

Luckily, Kobo has its own huge ebook store with more than 5 million titles in it that you can buy right from your Aura One. You’ll get personalized recommendations based on your preferences, as Kobo learns what you like to read.

Library card owners will be happy to hear that the Aura One makes borrowing ebooks easier than ever before. Kobo’s parent company Rakuten owns Overdrive, which is the most popular system for public libraries that lend ebooks. Overdrive is built right into the Aura One. After setting up your library card and signing in, you’ll see the option to borrow available ebooks whenever you search the Kobo store. It’s that simple.

Previously, library lending was a real hassle that involved dozens of steps, but with the Aura One, I borrowed a few books from the library without a problem. The files will disappear when your lending period is up, but you can always renew them.

On a Kindle, you have to borrow the book online, or through the Overdrive app. From there, you can ask to download the Kindle file and get it sent to your Kindle without having to plug anything in. Still, it involves using another device, so Kobo’s method is easier.

One-month battery life

Kobo says the Aura One’s battery should last through about a month of reading. Of course, that will vary widely based on your reading habits and your display’s brightness. So far, the Aura One is still going strong after a solid week of reading. We expect Kobo’s one-month battery life estimate is right on the money, which is great.

Warranty information

Kobo has a one-year limited warranty, so if your device malfunctions, you should be able to get it repaired or replaced, barring any “acts of God.”

Conclusion

I thought ebook readers couldn’t get any better than Amazon’s Kindle Oasis, but Kobo’s Aura One has beaten the former best. You’ll still prefer the Oasis if you’re deeply embedded in Amazon’s Kindle ebook system, but if you don’t, the Aura One is objectively a better reader. It has several killer features that the Kindle Oasis doesn’t have: It’s waterproof, it stifles blue light, it supports more ebook formats, it has a larger screen, and it has built-in borrowing from your public library. And it’s more than $60 cheaper!

What more could a bookworm ask for?

While prices of Amazon devices are set for being premium, the price of Kobo Aura One is driven by functionality. Continue reading to learn about Aura One’s unique features.

Kobo Aura One – major features

Kobo Aura One has a large 7.8-inch HD e-paper screen. It has the size of a spacious hardcover book, where you can additionally increase the font size without the need to decrease line height and margins. The end benefit is that you can comfortably read without turning the pages too often.

The device comes with an 8 GB internal memory, compared to 4 GB in every other e-reader from popular brands. It means you can store twice as many ebooks on Kobo Aura One than on competing devices. Actually, it’s even more than twice, when you take into consideration a portion of the memory (the same in 4 and 8 GB) devoted to system files.

There are three more features worth discussing – and it’s thanks to them Kobo Aura One is a truly unique device:

  • night mode,
  • IPX8 waterproof certificate,
  • built-in library borrowing solution,

What is night mode in Kobo Aura One?

Don’t expect the night mode that is a standard in book-reading apps – where the color of the background is switched to black or dark, and letters to white or light.

Night mode in Kobo Aura is a part of ComfortLight Pro. It’s the same functionality as Night Shift in iPhone and iPad, or Blue Shade in Amazon Fire tablets.

To put it simply, the screen gets warmer when the sun goes down and in the evening. The feature optimizes the exposure of the blue light emitted by LED lights around the screen. It’s shown in the animated gif we made using images from Kobo Aura One product page on Kobo website.

While the blue light control is becoming common in tablets and smartphones, Kobo Aura is the first e-ink e-reader to feature it.

Is changing the warmth of the screen light important? Let’s quote Colleen Carney, Director of the Sleep and Depression Laboratory at Ryerson University:

Getting the right amount of sleep is extremely important, and is just as valuable to your health as a balanced diet and daily exercise routine

Which waterproof level does Kobo Aura One offer?

The 2016 waterproof e-reader from Kobo meets requirements of IPX8 rating.

The system of waterproof certificates is quite complicated. Enough to say that Kobo Aura One is waterproof even when you put it into water 2 meters below the surface and keep there for up to an hour.

The waterproof level is twice as higher as offered by Kobo Aura h3O or Nook GlowLight Plus (IP67). It was achieved thanks to HZO Protection, a coating technology applied to the interior of the device.

This solution is highly comfortable. There is no need to close the ports with waterproof caps every time you want to read in the bathroom.

How can I connect Kobo Aura One to my public library?

Kobo Aura One – comparisons

Kobo Aura One 2016 is the second waterproof e-reader from Kobo, after the 6.8-inch Kobo Aura h3O, introduced in October 2014. And there is also Nook GlowLight Plus from Barnes & Noble.

It’s quite obvious that users who want to buy a waterproof device for reading ebooks will compare these three models.

As you see, the 2016 Kobo Aura One is the clear winner. It has the largest screen (7.8-inch), with the biggest resolution (1872 × 1404 px).

While featuring the largest screen, Kobo Aura One is the thinnest of the three compared devices. Its depth is only 6.9 mm – almost 3 millimeters less than Kobo Aura h30.

The new Aura One is also the only e-reader that sports 8 GB on-board memory. It’s twice as much as in two other models. That means it can store more than twice as many book files as the competitors. Kobo claims 6,000 ebooks should easily fit the device’s internal disc.

Most importantly, Kobo Aura One meets a higher waterproof standard than competitors. It’s rated IPX8, and that means it’s waterproof when you keep it for one hour 2 meters under the water surface.

Add to it a unique feature that comes with ComfortLight Pro – the blue light adjustment depending on the time of a day – and the price tag above $200 is entirely justified.

Kobo Aura Edition 2 (2016) – 6-inch

Kobo Aura 2016 – details

Kobo Aura Edition 2 (2016) was announced on August 17, 2016. It’s a refreshed version of the 2013 Kobo Aura e-reader.

The device features the front lighted 1024 × 768 px display, a 4 GB internal memory, and costs $119.99. Opposite to its predecessor, the display is not on the same level as the surrounding bezel.

When it comes to the screen, it doesn’t meet the 2016 standards any longer. You could expect a lower price from a device with a standard-definition screen.

Some under-the-hood improvements have been made to meet the current expectations. The front light solution has been improved, and there is an up-to-date software installed.

Below you’ll find international launch dates of Kobo Aura Edition 2 (2016)

October / November 2016 Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, the Philippines

Kobo Aura 2016 – comparisons

If you are looking for an affordable an e-reader that features a front lighted display, you can pick up either Kobo Aura Edition 2 or Glo HD.

In the table below we compare these two models with Kindle Paperwhite, that has the same price as Aura ($120), but the high-definition screen comparable to Glo HD.

Price $119.99 $129.99 $119.99

The comparison shows that the devil is in the screen resolution.

With the standard-definition display having only 1024 × 768 px, Kobo Aura Edition 2 provides a lower reading comfort than two other e-readers.

Unfortunately, the 2016 Kobo Aura bears the same price as Kindle Paperwhite ($119.99), which sports an HD 1440 × 1080 px screen at 300 ppi. Why not get a device with a crispier screen for the same price?

On the other hand, if you want to stay in the Kobo ecosystem, why not pay $10 more to get Glo HD with 1448 × 1072 display instead of 1024 × 768?

Kobo Aura Edition 2 (2016) should cost less, between $80 and $100, to be the most affordable front-light e-reader. In my opinion, we can expect price deals this fall when the 2016 Aura will be offered for under $100.

Kobo Aura One

The $229.99 Kobo Aura One is not your average ebook reader. It's waterproof, for starters, and boasts one of the largest E Ink touch screens we've seen. It also has adaptive front lighting that automatically shifts color temperature to reduce eye strain. You get a generous 8GB of storage, though there is no microSD card slot. And the display has a somewhat shadowy effect at the edges that takes some getting used to. But if you want to read in the bath or at the beach on a large, clear display without fear of water damage, the Kobo Aura One is well worth considering. Our Editors' Choice, the less expensive Kindle Paperwhite, remains a better value—as long as you don't get it wet.

Design and DisplayThe Kobo Aura One measures 7.7 by 5.5 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and weighs 8.1 ounces, which makes it the biggest ebook reader we've tested in quite some time. The closest equivalent is Kobo's Aura h3O, an older waterproof reader that measures 7.0 by 5.1 by 0.4 inches and weighs 8.2 ounces. The Kindle Paperwhite, meanwhile, comes in at 6.7 by 4.6 by 0.4 inches and 7.2 ounces. Even though the Aura One is the biggest of the bunch, it still feels comfortable to hold in one hand for a long period of time.

The front of the reader is covered in black plastic with a faint Kobo logo at the lower left corner, while the back is made of textured rubber with an embedded Kobo lobo on the right. The texture makes it easier to grip, but has a tendency to attract fingerprints. A small, rectangular power button is also located on the back, on a strip of smooth plastic that runs across the top. A micro USB charging port can be found on the bottom edge of the reader.

View All 8 Photos in Gallery

At 7.8 inches, the Aura One has the largest E Ink display you can get among the current crop of ebook readers. It features 1,872-by-1,404-pixel resolution, which works out to a crisp 300 pixels per inch. Flush-mounted adaptive front lighting automatically adjusts brightness and color temperature, so you can read in bed without blue light affecting your sleep (short-wavelength blue light, which many screens emit, can suppress the sleep-inducing hormone melatonin). The blue light filter works similarly to Night Shift on iOS, which makes the screen's color temperature warmer to reduce eye strain.

The screen is easily visible in all types of lighting conditions, including direct sunlight. If anything, it almost looks better outside than it does indoors. When inside, the edges of the screen show a very slight darkening, almost like the shadow cast by the curve of an actual book page, which can be distracting if you're sensitive to subtle imperfections.

The Aura One is rated IPX8 for waterproofing, so it can be immersed in up to two 6.5 feet of water for up to one hour. That makes it a good companion for the beach or pool.

FeaturesThe reader connects to 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, and will last up to a month before it requires a recharge, though obviously that number depends heavily on how much you read.

Kobo includes a micro USB cable for charging the Aura and connecting it to your computer. Under the hood there's a 1GHz processor and 512MB of RAM, the same as you get with most new Kindles. There's also 8GB of storage, which is double the amount you find on many ebook readers. But there's no microSD card slot, so you're stuck with a finite amount of storage. That's fine if you're using lightweight ebook files, but can become a problem if you're fond of high-resolution PDFs.

The Aura One supports PDF, MOBI, and the popular EPUB and EPUB3 formats, which Amazon's Kindles do not. You can also load BMP, GIF, PNG, JPEG, TXT, HTML, XHTML, and RTF files, as well as CBZ and CBR formats for comic books. Supported languages include Dutch, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish, and Turkish.

Kobo makes it easy to borrow ebooks via OverDrive, a service that pulls from the selections of local libraries. All you need is a free Overdrive account, a Facebook log-in, or a library card number. However, not all libraries support OverDrive, so you may want to search which ones do ahead of time. Pocket, an app that lets you to save articles you find online so you can read them offline, comes preinstalled.

Interface and ReadingThe home screen lets you sort books alphabetically, by title or author. There are also tabs for Recommendations, New Releases, and the Top 50 Books on the Kobo store, which you can access by tapping any of those icons, or by tapping on the search bar above. There are toolbar icons at the top of the screen for Home, Brightness, Wi-Fi networks and settings, a battery life indicator, and a menu where you can access additional settings that include languages, syncing, account info, OverDrive info, and device information.

Tapping Brightness opens up a window where you can enable the Auto-Adjust setting for both Brightness and Natural Light. You can also manually control each setting by shifting a slider. Natural Light adjusts the screen's color temperature, from a cool, white spectrum during the day to a warmer, candlelight-like hue for nighttime reading. With the auto setting on, the device gradually adjusts the light color based on the time of day and the amount of light hitting the front sensor.

There are 11 built-in fonts and more than 50 font sizes to choose from, which is better than what you get on Kindles, and you can adjust line spacing and margins with sliders. You can also align the text to the center or left of the screen, and adjust the page controls so you can choose where to tap the screen in order to advance pages. There's also a built-in dictionary, the ability to select passages and look them up in Google or Wikipedia, and the option to display progress based on chapters or the entire book. You can also share favorite passages, quotes, and books to Facebook. And you can view details like the average time it takes to read a chapter or a full title.

Left to right: Amazon Kindle Oasis, Kobo Aura One, Amazon Kindle

When it's asleep, the Aura One displays large cover images. Unlike the Kobo Glo HD, which takes about 10 seconds to wake up, the Aura One awakens from sleep mode instantly.

Like most ebook readers, you tap or swipe the sides of the screen to turn pages. The Aura One is quick to register light touches, even when adjusting settings like brightness. Page refreshes—when you see dark full-page flashes after every six turns—are quick. I never experienced any discomfort holding the Aura One or reading the text on its screen.

Kobo Store and ConclusionsThe Kobo store is home to more than four million titles, including magazines and newspapers. In a random comparison, every major title I searched for was available from both Amazon and Kobo. Books are generally cheaper through Amazon, but Kobo offers a price match guarantee. It's also worth noting that the EPUB format that Kobo supports is more open, so you're free to download books from any digital shop.

With its large screen, waterproof design, and wide file format support, the Aura One is another solid ebook reader from Kobo. But $230 is a lot to spend, especially when there are significantly more affordable options that offer the same basic experience. Our Editors' Choice, the Kindle Paperwhite, gets you a similarly excellent screen and comparable performance for nearly half the price. Just keep in mind it isn't waterproof. If you plan to sit poolside, the Kobo Aura h3O remains a less expensive alternative, although its screen isn't as sharp and it lacks adaptive lighting.
