iRobot Roomba 980 Review – The Good, The Bad, & The Bottom Line

As if we needed an excuse to hang out on the couch a few minutes longer, iRobot’s Roomba 980 has given us just that – app control to conduct your easiest floor cleaning efforts ever. In this article, we’re going to review the Roomba 980: what it is, pros and cons, and the ways it can be controlled. Basically, if you have a smart phone and this robot vacuum, you can clean your floors from anywhere in the world with this robot vacuum. Interested? Let’s dive in.

What is the Roomba 980 ?

The iRobot Roomba 980 is a robot vacuum that, essentially, cleans floors without someone physically manipulating the vacuum. It’s a self-sufficient cleaning device.

What the Roomba 980 Looks Like: Design & Features. The Roomba 980 is, like other Roombas, a flat and round vacuum. It is nearly 14” in diameter and 3.6” high, and it weighs a little under 9 pounds (8.7 pounds, to be exact). There are two primary rotating brushes and an additional spinning side brush to cover both the floors themselves and the wedges of the floor next to walls. The Roomba 980 houses a removeable dust bin (it’s smart, but not that smart).

There is a user-friendly focus with its centrally located and minimalist CLEAN, HOME, and SPOT MODE buttons. (CLEAN is the largest button, with the other two smaller buttons flanking it.) You can manually control the starting and stopping of cleaning cycles with these buttons. In addition, a row of LED indicator lights above the buttons indicate wi-fi connectivity, troubleshooting required, battery charging, full dust bin, and dirt detection.

The robot vacuum comes also with two AA battery-powered Virtual Wall Lighthouses, which can be easily set up to serve as a projected boundary, across which the Roomba 980 will not pass. Also, a Halo mode can be used for protection around sensitive areas, such as pet food and water bowls.

What Makes the Roomba 980 Different from Other Robot Vacuums. What has just been described, however, isn’t anything all that different from many of the robot vacuums on the market today. Yet the Roomba 980 is different. How? This robot vacuum is equipped with wi-fi connectivity, which means that you can control the vacuum via its smart phone app. You can schedule routine cleaning cycles, control suction boost on carpets (“Carpet Boost”), request two cleaning passes for an extra-clean floor, and even use a perimeter clean mode (“Edge Clean”).

It should be noted that the added features, such as Carpet Boost, require more work from the motor, which of course will decrease the battery life for that cleaning cycle. On hard floors and in the standard cleaning mode, the Roomba 980 can clean continuously for up to 2 hours.

Pros & Cons Of the Roomba 980

Pros of the Roomba 980.

Based upon a variety of reviews, the following features are Roomba 980 benefits:

  • Self-sufficient robotic vacuum that is practically unstoppable during cleaning and that can differentiate between hard floors and carpets/rugs, altering cleaning methods automatically for the best clean on that type of floor.
  • Wi-fi connectivity (on both android and iOS devices), which allows the robot vacuum to be controlled remotely via a smart phone app and/or Amazon Alexa.
  • Long-lasting lithium ion battery (an upgrade from other Roomba models’ NiMH batteries). This new battery type is designed to maintain consistent powerful suction for longer during the Roomba 980’s cleaning cycles, as well as have a longer overall lifespan before needing to be replaced.
  • Three cleaning brushes (two 6.2” rotating brushes, one spinning side brush) and a dust bin that are all easy to remove and clean.
  • Additional sensors, such as a floor-tracking sensor, which allow the Roomba 980 to adeptly navigate through and clean your house’s floors despite changes in floor types, furniture placement, and even clutter. These sensors give the Roomba 980 more information as to where it’s already been and where, map-wise, it still needs to go to clean.
  • A low-resolution camera. Coupled with the added sensors, Roomba 980 is able to use grid-based movement mapping for greater efficiency and accuracy in cleaning.
  • Two Virtual Walls, included, which are powered by AA batteries and can be set up to define boundaries to keep the Roomba 980 out of specified areas.
  • Sleek, matte look, with a color that’s somewhere between black, brown, and even grey. Modern, simplified interface with just three buttons on the Roomba 980 exterior: Clean, Home, and Spot Mode.
  • A voice to communicate what is needed, such as error numbers or the fact that it is stopping because it needs to be recharged.
  • Satisfying transitions onto/off of rugs, along with a good cleaning capacity on rugs of various piles.

Cons of the Roomba 980.

Nothing is absolutely perfect, and the following features are Roomba 980 disadvantages:

  • Expensive, coming in at around $900 USD. This is a couple hundred dollars more than several other popular robot vacuums.
  • Advanced features are available only through the iRobot Home app; there is no remote control with this robot vacuum, because the smart phone IS the remote control.
  • Suction performance isn’t superior enough to some of the previous Roomba models or other robot vaccums on the market to justify the added cost.
  • No readout or notification for remaining battery life.
  • Doesn’t connect with third-party devices, such as smart home automation systems.
  • Noise level. Not the quietest robot vacuum on the market today; while it’s not blatantly noisy, it is difficult to watch television or have a normal conversation in the same room as the Roomba 980.

How does the Roomba 980 Work?

Manual Control of the Roomba 980.

If you’re looking to use the Roomba 980 via manual control, you’ll see three distinct buttons on the outside of your vacuum. These are easy to spot because there’s nothing else on the outside of your vacuum.

  • CLEAN button: Press the large, centrally located CLEAN button one time. This will “wake up” the robot vacuum. Press CLEAN a second time to start the vacuum on its cleaning cycle. If you need to pause the vacuum while it’s going, press CLEAN again while it’s running. Holding CLEAN button for a couple of seconds will end the cleaning cycle.
  • HOME button: Pressing the smaller HOME button (on the side of the CLEAN button) will return the Roomba 980 to its docking station, where it will recharge as well as shut down.
  • SPOT MODE button: Press the smaller SPOT MODE button (also located on the side of the CLEAN button) one time to focus Roomba 980 on one specific area. The target area will be about 3’ in diameter. This button is specially designed for particularly dirty areas (not the whole floor), where a concentrated cleaning effort is required.

Smart App Control of the Roomba 980.

View in gallery

Those who have smart phones, either android or iOS, will greatly enjoy the added controllability of the Roomba 980 via the iRobot Home app. To get this feature up and running on your phone, you’ll simply need to download the app while your Roomba 980 is docked in a plugged-in charging station. Setting up the app typically takes just a few minutes when connected to your local wi-fi network.

The Roomba 980 will actually emit audio cues during this process to let you know you’re on your way. Once you’re set up, you can play around in the app, easily navigating to a variety of controllability options. These include automatic scheduling for your Roomba 980 to do its thing, along with cleaning extras such as Carpet Boost, Two Cleaning Passes, and Edge Clean.

View in gallery

Regardless of how you control the Roomba 980 initially, it is enabled with smart technology and sensors so that, the more it cleans, the smarter it gets with regard to areas that it’s already cleaned, areas that need additional cleaning, etc. Eventually, the Roomba 980 will get to a point that its open area cleaning consists of systematic cleaning swipes in parallel lined passes.

The bottom line

Get it from Amazon: iRobot Roomba 980.

The wi-fi-enabled iRobot Roomba 980 is certainly an exciting and impressive smart vacuum in many rights. Some reviewers feel it is the best robotic vacuum on the market to date. It pushes the envelope in a variety of ways and with useful and interesting features that make hands-off cleaning much easier. However, coupled with the high cost of the Roomba 980, this convenience comes with a significant price tag. And some claim that the very cutting-edge features have somewhat sacrificed the aggressive and thorough cleaning capabilities one would hope for in a smart vacuum. But, overall, if you want to be able to just forget about your robot vacuum and come home to floors that are cleaner, the Roomba 980 is an excellent choice.

The Roomba 980 is iRobot's best robot vacuum yet

We have a ritual in my house. I bring home a random gadget, deposit it somewhere in my home and my wife asks me what it is, gives me side-eye and then ignores the gear until it is removed from the premises. With the new iRobot Roomba 980, however, she broke the routine and as I traveled, she quietly put the new robot vacuum to work.

IRobot’s robot vacuums have always been the kind of product whose inherent simplicity invites even the most technophobic to give it a try. You set the robot cleaning by pressing one big clean button. My wife likes that.

Of course, watching Roomba clean has always been an exercise in frustration. It usually starts by making crop circles on your floor or rug and generally seems lost. I like the Roomba and believe it can be a good vacuum, but have long counseled owners to not watch the robot clean.

iRobot Roomba robot vacuum expertly handles hard floors and rungs like this.

The new Roomba remarkably makes the robot even easier to use and, most importantly, makes it much, much smarter about cleaning a room — even an entire first floor.

It’s an appliance

With the exception of needing an initial charge (which takes a few hours), Roomba 980 is ready to clean out of the box, just like a regular vacuum. Similarities with your traditional upright more or less end there.

Since the original robo vacuum almost 15 years ago, the Roomba has been disc shaped (roughly a foot and a half across) and a few inches tall. It includes suction power, rolling brushes and a sweeping brush that extends out from one side to get stuff in the corners. There’s a rather spacious dust bin and a filter to catch the finer particles. The 980 also ships with a pair of virtual walls. Over the years these have shrunk from something a bit larger than a clenched fist that took two D-size batteries into sleek 1-inch cube towers that take just a couple of AA batteries.

For years, you’ve been able to use physical remote controls to control Roomba and set cleaning schedules. That‘s become kind of quaint in our always-connected, smart-device-filled homes. Fortunately, the Roomba 980 brings with it Wi-Fi connectivity and an iPhone app.

Getting the Roomba 980 on my home network was pretty painless. The app assists by finding the network your phone is already on. You do have to temporarily connect your phone to the Wi-Fi signal emanating from the Roomba and then, if all goes well, your Roomba is on your home network. Once I had it on mine, I got to name it (you can control multiple Roomba 980’s from one app). For now Roomba cannot connect to any other smart devices or networks in the home.

The app mimics the simplicity of the vacuum. Your main interface is one big “Clean” button — just like the one on top of Roomba. When I pressed it, Roomba made its signature little toodle and then left its charging station in search of dirt.

iRobot's Roomba App is the model of simplicity. Guess which button you press.

Roomba is far quieter than most big home vacuums, but it is by no means quiet. When I sent it out, my son who was a couple of rooms away asked what the noise was. When Roomba rolled from a wood floor to a carpet, the sound got significantly louder, which is actually a good thing. It meant the updated AeroForce motor was working harder on rugs. This ability to auto switch modes depending on the sensed floor surface is new and welcome. I noticed that it never failed to switch, even when it was only rolling over a door mat.

Which way did it go?

For the first time ever, Roomba’s cleaning seems more purposeful. As I watched it head out in my great room (a connected den, dining room and kitchen), I noticed that it went straight, no seemingly random curves, no crop circles. It navigated around furniture using both its bumper sensor and the brand new VSLAM integration. It’s VSLAM (Visual Simultaneous, Localization and Mapping) which allows the Roomba to finally see a room and the objects in it. This makes it much more efficient and smarter at cleaning and allows it to work in a series of lines instead of a random cleaning pattern.

Of course, this works great in rooms like my kitchen, which has almost no furniture. In the dining room, it still has to work its way around six chairs and the base of the table. From what I could see, the Roomba 980 did this fine, though it looks a bit more like its old random Roomba self when it’s doing it.

iRobot Roomba 980's new, more powerful and smarter AeroForce motor.

I let the Roomba 980 work its way through the first floor of my home for almost two hours. Unlike a human, it just kept going with nary a complaint. In fact, it never got truly stuck. It did struggle a bit with the threshold between my kitchen and living room, but the drop off is almost three-quarters of an inch. As a result, Roomba got stuck cleaning in the living room. Eventually, I had to pick it up by the integrated handle and move it to dining room. For subsequent cleaning jobs, I used a virtual wall to block it from entering that room.

Later, I used the app to set a weekly schedule of cleaning, which was super easy. You just turn on scheduling on a per day basis and then set the time.

The other tester

I had to travel during my Roomba 980 test period and left the robot in the care of my wife, whom I figured would ignore it unless I set it out on a cleaning job while I was away (something I can do with the app and the Roomba 980’s Wi-Fi connection).

When I checked my Facebook feed, I noticed my wife had posted a blurry picture of the Roomba in action. She joked she was testing my products for me. I was surprised since I hadn’t trained her on it or explained how it would work.

When I got back home she told me she had just pressed the clean button and then let it get to work. She was, she said, surprised at how well it did, but did notice a couple of issues. It did seem to ignore a portion of the kitchen, got caught on a plug and my wife had to rescue it and then, finally, it indicated that the dustbin was full, but that message never came to the app, even though I should’ve gotten an alert.

iRobot Roomba 980 looks sleek on top and like the workhorse it really is on the bottom. Those big wheels help it traverse high-pile rungs and event obstacles like wires.

I took a look at the Roomba 980 and saw the red indicator light and when I pulled the dustbin, a column of gray dust trailed out of the front of it. It was quite full and, to be honest, I was pleased to see just how much dirt it had actually picked up. It was impressive. I also pulled the filter and shook the dirt and dust off it, as well. I have to say it’s easier and less of a mess to clear the Roomba than it is any traditional vacuum.

App control

As I mentioned, the app makes it easy to start cleaning and it’s also just as easy to pause or stop a job. You just hit the clean button during a cleaning job and the app will ask if you want to stop it. When I did this, the Roomba 980 paused and then began searching for its charging station, which was about a foot away from it. Unfortunately, the Roomba 980 could not find it and, after almost 10 minutes, announced an error 18. When I hit the little “!” on the app, it gave this explanation: The Roomba 980 could not find the charging station.

The iRobot Roomba App gives you instant feedback and pretty constant control of the robot vacuum.

The problem, I think, was that it was sitting next to a hutch that blocked part of the signal. When I moved the charging station forward so that it its front edge was nearly aligned with the front of the hutch, the Roomba 980 easily found it. If you buy the Roomba 980, I would suggest you put the charging station in a spot where it can be seen from all angles.

Clean at a price

At $899, the iRobot Roomba 980 is easily one of the most expensive vacuums on the market. Even a Dyson DC39 canister vacuum costs less (roughly $479). What you’re paying for here is the intelligence and drive. This is a vacuum and personal assistant all in one. It has the mechanics of a good vacuum and nearly the intelligence of a human to run it. The addition of Wi-Fi connectivity and app-readiness is more than welcome,; it's a must they should have added years ago. Getting it connected to other smart home devices is something I hope iRobot accomplishes soon.

Watching it clean, I’m pretty certain it does a more thorough job than most human vacuumers. And the Roomba 980 it does something none of the other traditional vacuums do — it frees you of the task. You can set it and forget it, except when the Roomba 980 needs cleaning, extricating from a jam or help finding its charging station. Those things do happen, but they are still rare enough to make Roomba worth the money.

If you need further evidence, ask my wife, who, after using the vacuum and learning the price, still said she wanted one.

iRobot Roomba 980 review

Though most automated vacuum cleaners are happy to bounce around your rooms, bumping into furniture like a drunk sleepwalker, iRobot’s Roomba 980 is leading the pack in terms of vacuum intelligence.

Armed with a number of iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors and iRobot’s proprietary visual simultaneous localisation and mapping technology (or vSLAM for short), the Roomba 980 impressed greatly when it was released in the US and UK late last year. Now, iRobot’s most advanced vacuum cleaner to date has finally arrived on Australian shores.

As packed as it is with high tech features, including newly-added iOS and Android app control and Wi-Fi connectivity, the Roomba 980’s increased functionality over previous models does bring with it a hefty price tag – one that may realistically make the unit inaccessible for many users (US$899 / £799.99 / AU$1499).

That said, we’re convinced that the iRobot Roomba 980 offers enough robotic wizardry and technological advancements to make it a viable purchase for those who can afford it, or an utterly magnificent gift that’ll likely make you the favourite son or daughter in your family.

  • Best vacuum cleaners: from cordless Dyson to robot Roomba

The set up

Right out of the box, it’s possible to have the Roomba 980 up and running in a matter of minutes. Once you’ve plugged your Home Base docking station’s power cord into a wall socket, all you have to do is remove the battery pull tab and yellow bin insert from the Roomba’s undercarriage, press the clearly marked ‘Clean’ button in top of the unit, and your automated vacuum will start cleaning your home immediately.

Press the unit’s ‘Home’ button, and the Roomba 980 will stop everything and, in one of its most impressive acts of futuristic awesomeness, automatically guide itself over to its charging station like it’s following a homing beacon. It’ll also do this when it’s running low on battery or if its bin is full.

Appy days

Though this control method is already quite easy to manage, the Roomba 980 is also the first iRobot device that can be controlled via an iOS or Android app. Connecting the unit to the app is a cinch – the iRobot app will automatically detect your Wi-Fi network and ask if you want to connect your Roomba to it.

Next, type in the password to your Wi-Fi network and hit continue. Go to the unit and hold down the buttons with ‘Home’ and ‘Crosshair’ symbols on them until you hear a tone and the lights blink. Release the buttons and the ‘Wi-Fi’ indicator will flash to let you know it’s attempting to connect. Once the network setup is complete, you can now start and stop your Roomba 980 from your phone, schedule up to three cleaning times per day, and even adjust the device’s cleaning behaviour, such as whether you want it to automatically initiate carpet boost mode or perform edge cleaning duties.

It should be noted that issuing commands to the Roomba 980 from your smartphone or tablet isn’t an instantaneous affair. Actually, the vacuum performs sort of like a printer in this regard, sending queued requests that will sometimes take a few minutes to be recognised. At first, you may be tempted to repeatedly issue these commands in an attempt to get a response, but this will only add more jobs to your queue and get you further from your desired action.

Domo arigato, Mr. iRobot

The Roomba 980’s iAdapt 2.0 navigation sensors allow it to move around and clean an entire floor of your house without crashing into things or dropping down stairs or ledges. It will still bump into walls and furniture, but in a way that’s ever so gentle.

Cleverly mapping your home’s layout as it cleans, iRobot’s vSLAM technology actually scans the environment around the Roomba 980 to memorise and create distinct visual landmarks. This helps it keep track of where it has already been, making clean up jobs more direct and efficient.

Instead of forcing its way through things, the Roomba 980 will hug itself along obstructions, including chair legs, bicycle wheels or any other solid object that’s touching the floor, inching around them until it’s cleaned as much uncovered floor space as possible.

At 35.05cm in diameter, the Roomba 980 is wider than your average vacuum head, but thanks to its circular design and rotating body, it’s able to manoeuver through narrower areas than you’d initially think were possible.

It’s pretty low to the ground, too, though at 9.14cm in height, there’s a chance it could be a little too tall to pass under some beds, which is the kind of hard-to-reach area that would be ideal for an automated vacuum such as this.

In the box, you’ll also find a pair of battery-operated Dual Mode Virtual Wall Barriers. As the name implies, these act as a virtual wall that will keep the Roomba from crossing certain areas. For instance, if you don’t want the Roomba to enter a particular room, you can place one of these barriers down by the entrance. These are also great for keeping the device away from your ground-level pet food bowls.

Ridin’ cleanly

The Roomba 980 works magnificently on floorboards, tiles and other hard surfaces (operating relatively quietly while doing so), but it actually kicks things up a notch when entering carpeted territory. Able to sense when it has rolled over carpet, the Roomba 980’s Gen 3 motor and AeroForce cleaning system will kick in to automatically increase its power by 10x in order to blow all dust and dirt that’s gathered in your rugs out of hiding.

On the Roomba 980’s undercarriage, you’ll find the same dual counter rotating extractors that were first introduced with the Roomba 800, and a spinning brush head with long bristles near the vacuum's to help clean corners and other places that a circular automated vacuum would generally find hard to reach. You might still find some missed dirt in these areas, but the bristles will still remove about as much junk from your corners as a regular, non-pointy vacuum head would.

It’s also able to climb over shallow steps, like the base of a cat scratching post, though it will occasionally spin out a little when rolling over cables. With that said, the Roomba will never actually get tangled in them or suck them up.

On a full charge, the Roomba 980 can clean for up to two hours, though it will return to its charging dock when its bin is full. This is indicated by a flashing red light situated on top of the vacuum just below the iRobot logo.

A large button on the front of the device lets you detach its bin, and though it looks quite small, it actually manages to squeeze a whole lot of dirt into its chamber. Under the bin, you’ll also be able to access the Roomba’s filter, which you can remove and shake clean at your leisure.

Verdict

As expensive as it is, there’s no denying that iRobot’s Roomba 980 is a gloriously advanced automated vacuum. With its environment mapping and self navigation, the latest Roomba never ceases to impress – watching it automatically guide itself back to its charging station is always a delight. Though its app is a little on the sluggish side, and it struggles slightly when rolling over cables, every part of the Roomba 980 experience exudes quality. If vacuums do become sentient one day, it’s likely that they’ll aspire to be just like this one.

Roomba 980 Review

Last update on 2019-10-04 at 21:29 / Affiliate links / Images from Amazon Product Advertising API

Roomba 980 is the latest model of iRobot and offers everything that is included in Roomba 960 and also a much stronger and newer motor with higher battery life, an additional virtual wall for controlled cleaning, and power boost mode for better cleaning of carpets.

It also has on-board sensors which allows it to scan its overall surroundings and make smart decisions for proper cleaning based on these observations. Even though Roomba 980 is quite pricey, it is one of the best vacuums available in the market.

Roomba 980 Components and Accessories

The Roomba 980 robot vacuum comes with the following components:

Charging base – The charging unit consists of a base and a charging rod. When the battery of Roomba 980 runs low on charge, it automatically returns to its charging unit to charge up. In case it has not finished with its cleaning job yet, after charging it will start its cleaning schedule to where it left off and continued until it’s done.

HEPA filter – This filter works along with the AeroForce filtration system for enhanced cleaning power.

Spinning brush – The spinning brush is fixed into the bottom of the vacuum and spins while cleaning, enabling Roomba to clean around the corners and edges.

Virtual Wall Barriers – The Roomba 980 come with 2 virtual wall barriers. These can be utilized to block off some areas in the house that you don’t want the vacuum to enter. For example you might not want the Roomba to enter into the kitchen and laundry room during its cleaning job, so you just place the two virtual wall barriers in these rooms and you are done.

Roomba 960 is an older version of Roomba 980, and although it contains most of the features that are available in Roomba 980, it lacks the power boost carpet cleaning and enhanced powerful motor.

Furthermore, it also has shorter run time (75 min compared to 120 min of the 980 model). It should be noted, however, that Roomba 960 is available at a much lower price (around $200 cheaper). Additionally, Roomba 960 also has the same navigation system, on-board camera, and the AeroForce filtration system as the 980.

Roomba 960 Components and Accessories

Roomba 960 consists of the following parts and accessories:

Charging base – The charging unit of Roomba 960 is similar to that of Roomba 980, however with shorter run time. It also comes with the return to charge automatically feature when the battery is low and resume its work where it left off when the charging has been completed.

HEPA filter – This filter works along with the AeroForce filtration system for enhanced cleaning power.

Spinning brush – The spinning brush spins while cleaning, enabling Roomba to clean around the corners and edges. It is fixed into the bottom of the vacuum.

Virtual Wall Barriers – The Roomba 960 features only 1 virtual wall barrier compared to 2 for the 980 model. It works similarly to that of Roomba 980 and helps to stay off the spaces that you do not want Roomba to get into.

Comparison: Roomba 980 Vs 960

Now, we will be comparing both the robots to analyze them with respect to various aspects and conclude which iRobot vacuum is better than the other. So, let’s start!

Set Up Process

It is very important for people to know that whether the product they are buying is easier to set up or not. No one wants to spend hours on YouTube tutorials or guidebooks to understand the process.

Roomba 960 and 980 are DIY gadgets that take some time to set up, but we wouldn’t want you to think that the process is too difficult. The setup procedure of Roomba 960 and 980 is quite easy and straightforward. It needs you to press some buttons and download the iRobot app for the vacuum cleaner.

On the off chance that you are unable to set it up, you can refer to the user guide for directions. Also, you can also contact the support team at the website of iRobot. They’ll happily assist you with anything that you need.

Performance and Cleaning Efficiency

On the off chance that you have a much older version of Roomba or have read reviews about the products of the previous generation, you would know that they had a random cleaning order. For instance, older Roomba models, for the most part, cleaned the same area again and again which caused battery drainage and the house being left partly cleaned.

All things considered, this issue has been solved for both Roomba 960 and 980. They clean your home in a smarter way, and it’ll make a point to not miss any spot in the room it’s cleaning.

Roomba 960 Vs older models

Roomba 960 is known for having a 2x improved performance rate over the Roomba 600-models, and it’s nearly on a par with the 980. Not at all like the past models,

Roomba 960 does not need to be looked after and you can be 100% sure that it’ll clean your home without breaking or colliding with the walls, tables or tumbling down the stairs. In short, Roomba 960 is quite a reliable automated vacuum that can be trusted.

Roomba 980 Vs older models

As for the Roomba 980, it is the most developed automated vacuum available. It has improved specifications, capacities and cleaning abilities. Roomba 980 is an intelligent floor cleaner that uses a preplanned framework that ensures that the automated vacuum cleans all of your home.

Other Capabilities

Roomba 960 and 980 both have an on-board camera that enables smart and intelligent floor cleaning to navigate itself all through your home. What’s more, they both utilize technology sensors that additionally helps the vacuum to dodge any hindrances like walls, tables, chairs, stands, and stairs.

Roomba 980 will flabbergast you with its performance rate, and we are 100% certain that it’ll surpass your expectations. Not only that, Roomba 980 has a power boost feature that enhances the power of the device and makes it much more effective when cleaning carpets.

What we like the most about Roomba 980 and 960 is its block-off feature. For instance, on the off chance that you need to confine the vacuum from cleaning certain spots, you can put that area on a “block-off” and Roomba won’t touch or go close it.

A standout amongst the most critical points of interest of Roomba 980 and 960 both is the lithium-ion batteries that enhance the lifespan of the automated vacuum. Roomba 980 has a better battery than the 960 version, and by having these new batteries, the life expectancy of Roomba 980 has enhanced, and it can clean your home longer without requiring frequent recharge.

Without any doubt, Roomba 980 is a trusted, reliable and quality-made intelligent floor cleaner that’ll impeccably clean your home.

If we compare the specifications of both the robots, it’s evident that Roomba 980 is the better iRobot vacuum of the two.

The power boost feature and 10x more power are sufficient to figure out which of these automated vacuums is a predominant device. However, the price difference of around $200 might not be worth the extra features if one does not need them anyway.

House Mapping and Cleaning Capabilities

When you turn on either Roomba 960 or 980, it’ll proceed straight until it collides with an obstacle. The very first thing the device will attempt is to map out your house.

They are both great at discovering their direction and ensuring everything is very much cleaned. Both work very good on all surfaces, and they are very effective in cleaning pet hair as well.

Moreover, cleaning under couches and beds is supported on both models with no problems.

Roomba 960 and 980 both have the ability to know where the charging unit is and whenever the battery becomes low, they will consequently dock themselves and get a full charge. And when they get charged, they automatically return to the position they left off and resume cleaning.

Though the power boost mode in 980, or also known as the carpet mode, uses a lot of power and also produces loud noises, it is supposed to work great on carpets.

In the general mode, Roomba 980 can keep running up to 120 minutes compared to the 75 minutes run-time of Roomba 960. The main issue Roomba 980 had was cleaning sand. However, it’s not a major issue since you’ll seldom discover sand in a house or a loft. Roomba 960 faced some issues with cleaning rugs and mats, leaving a little bit of dirt. However, it was not much of an issue.

Final Verdict

If your home is smaller and does not have many carpets etc, then we suggest to go with the Roomba 960 since you will save around $200 compared to 980 model.

iRobot Roomba 980 Review

If you are satisfied that you’ve found the best pool vacuum robot, maybe it’s time to shop for one for the house. iRobot is a good choice. Vacuuming is a laborious chore that I both hate and love. How so? Viewing the contents of the bin upon finish makes the chore worth it, but yet every time the chore comes to head I often skip it. After all, it’s a hassle to dig out the vacuum, unwind its cord, plug it in and then carefully navigate the contents of the room such that I don’t knock something over…and all the while reduce the number of times I have to plug it in to reach every corner of the room.  I own two Dyson vacuums and often use the handheld DC35, but only upon a spill or when a quick clean up is needed, such as removing the crumbs from the edge of my coffee table. So it’s for this reason that a robovac makes the most sense for me, and probably for millions of you like me.

So keep reading my iRobot Roomba 980 review to find out if this $899 robotic vacuum is right for you.

Design

Hidden is a small handle on the Roomba 980, making it easy to move from room to room or floor to floor.

To a large degree, the IRobot Roomba 980 looks like every other Roomba. Which is to say it sports their familiar hockey puck shape. However, unlike the lesser models (below the 960) the 980 sports a camera which maps out the room, allowing it to develop a log of visual landmarks and thus improve cleaning for next time. In short this means less bumping and more cleaning. And when it does hit something, there is a bump panel to help it detect obstacles and steer around or away from them. There are a few other sensors on board, including one to detect a ledge (aka cliff detection) and one to detect the presence of carpet, where upon the iRobot Roomba 980 will increase its suction power (“Dirt Detect™ Series II5 uses optical and acoustic sensors to detect high concentrations of dirt, dust and pet hair, and the robot then provides focused cleaning where it’s most needed”).

Standing at 3.6″ tall and 9.8″ in diameter, the IRobot Roomba 980 is able to fit under most coffee table, credenzas and those alike. For anything lower, there is a corner brush to sweep dirt into its path (much like Deebot D45), which is then sucked up by a set of rubber rollers that move dirt, pet hair and debris through its AeroForce® filter that purportedly captures 99% of allergens, pollen, and particles as small as 10 microns. It’s not up to HEPA standards, so if you’re looking to capture smaller particles, try this list of HEPA vacuums and HEPA air filters, with the latter probably being a better resolve since it’s more immediate.

As for charging, there is a simple base station included in the box. The IRobot Roomba 980 will return home when it’s done cleaning your room or when its battery runs low. That said, the 980 is capable of cleaning up to 2,000 square feet, though depending on settings may need to recharge itself, or the bin may need to be emptied, though you can override that last issue if needed. That said, the Roomba 980 is intelligent enough to know where to pick up from where it left off in the event it requires a recharges as it stores a layout of your home’s floors. I’m not sure if its memory caps out at 2,000 square feet, so you might want to check if your home is larger or simply buy a Roomba 980 for each floor.

Lastly, there is handle, albeit slightly hidden to my much surprise, and 3 buttons (home, spot cleaning and on/off) that are straight forward and easy to operate.

Performance

Developing a baseline for performance with any vacuum can be tough to measure. To me, the best indicator for quality or success, is just simply looking at the floor and the bin’s contents. In this particular case, the Roomba 980 performed admirably and with consistency.

I scheduled – via the app no less – my Roomba 980 to run 3 times a week in my living room/kitchen area, which is where the 980 lays its weary wheels. While emptying the bin after each cleaning wasn’t necessary, I still did as such to determine its efficacy. And I’m happy to report that while not full, the consistently removed debris, dirt, dust and pet hair from my hardwood floors, leaving little to be find by the naked eye. The 980 did however struggle to pick up crumbs in corners, which is likely due to its round shape, which didn’t allow it to get close enough access to remove or suck up dirt. That all being said, the Roomba 980 never once drove off the stairs in my living room save for the time a house slipper got in its path, and even then it drove half off the end and never took a complete tumble.

On the underbelly of the Roomba 980 there are a variety of sensors and rollers to help clean.

On the 980’s off days, I also placed it in my bedroom and bathroom, which is a mix of thin carpet (bedroom) and tile (bathroom). Here the Roomba 980 automatically increased its power (carpet boost), which in turn produced more noise, but the results each time were stupendous, filling up the bin to almost full with dust and long girlfriend hair. Again, I couldn’t help but note that the 980 struggled to get into the corners of my bathroom. But that last issue aside, I can now see how remiss I’ve been when it comes to vacuuming my bedroom, especially under my bed which is often unreachable with even the best upright vacuum.

App

Before you can use the Roomba 980 with your iOS or Android device, you’ll need to connect it to your home’s WiFi network. The app will walk you through the process, but note that it’s not compatible with WiFi networks that are 5Ghz. But fear not, as most new and top rated routers will have both the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz frequency running simultaneously.

You’ll likely want to empty the Roomba 980’s bin after every cleaning.

Once the 980 is connected to your home’s WiFi you’ll be able to manually activate the robovacs cleaning cycle, as well as schedule cleaning days and with that the time. My living room and kitchen, which are connected, total about 350 square feet. It takes the Roomba 980 about 30 minutes to completely clean the area, minus the space under the two sofas. And I know this because the Roomba app has a History section, allowing you to review the time and the total square footage covered. Interestingly enough, my Roomba 980 generally covers about 250-280 sq ft, which now makes me realize my home may be smaller than advertised. Good things I rent.

Within the app you can also view the status of the bin, rollers and sensors. When indicating “red” it’s time to address some issues, though you’ll need to manually reset the status in the app once you’ve performed any routine maintenance. There you can also view instructions and find links to new parts in the event something does break or wear beyond use.

I should note that remote access, while outside my home’s network, was slow to respond, but did work after a few attempts. But nevertheless, it did allow me to manually control cleaning if needed.

Wrap Up

Yes, the Roomba 980 comes at a premium. By comparison, there are view vacuums, be it canister, upright or handheld vacuums, that cost this much; $900. However, with it you get a vacuum that is capable of cleaning both carpet and hardwood all without damaging it. And doing so with a frequency that even a dedicated maid or housekeeper can’t attain.

And, if you’re still struggling with the price tag there are a few things to think about.

  1. How often do you vacuum now? The more you use a vacuum the greater the benefit and in turn the effective cost drops.
  2. What is your time worth? Vacuuming 2,000 square feet can take an hour or more. Wouldn’t you rather have that time back and in turn garner some piece of mind that your room or rooms are healthier to reside in.

To that end, the iOS app works flawless and makes scheduling the IRobot Roomba 980 ultra easy. It also helps you maintain the vacuum, which in upon itself requires nothing more than a Philips head screwdriver.
