System Requirements for Serial ATA

The following are needed to install a Serial ATA

(SATA) drive to a system:

SATA capable motherboard or controller card

SATA hard drive

SATA cable (1 meter or less in length)

Handling precautions

 Set the drive down gently to prevent damage

from impact or vibration.

 Do not open the ESD bag containing the drive

until needed.

 Handle the drive carefully by the edges. Do not

touch the exposed printed circuit board or any

electronic components.

 Do not press on the top or bottom of the drive.

 Before handling the drive, discharge any static

electricity from yourself and your clothing. With

one hand, touch an unpainted metal surface on

your computer chassis, then touch the ESD bag

with the other hand. Remain in contact with the

chassis and the bag for a minimum of two

seconds.

Quick installation procedure

Note: Back up all data before installing drive.

1. Turn off the computer.

2. Unplug the computer.

3. Remove the computer cover as instructed by

the computer system manual.

4. Discharge static electricity (see Handling

precautions).

5. Note the mounting position of existing drives

and cables. If you are replacing a drive or any

cable, remove it now.

6. Remove the drive from the ESD bag.

7. Record the model, the part number, and the

serial number of the drive for future reference.

8. Attach the Serial ATA cable to the drive. Match

key on cable to connector on drive

Mounting instructions

Note: The mounting hole and connector locations are

shown in figures 1 and 2.

1. Mount the drive securely.

2. Verify all attachments.

3. Replace the computer cover.

4. Plug in the computer.

5. Turn on the computer.

6. Verify that the hard disk is recognized by the

BIOS and is reporting the full capacity of the

drive. Instructions for accessing your BIOS can

be found in the computer system manual or in

the motherboard manufacturer documentation.

If the drive is not recognized in the BIOS, set

version 1.0

Double the Capacity Density

The new Ultrastar A7K2000 provides twice the data storage capacity of the prior generation Ultrastar A7K1000 drive, and does so using fewer watts. It is now possible to achieve a colossal 1.2 petabytes (PB) in the footprint of a standard 19-inch enterprise storage rack by deploying the 2TB A7K2000 in a stack of ten 4U, 60-bay enclosures.

Combining 7200 RPM Performance and Granular Power Control

Operating at 7200 RPM, the HGST Ultrastar A7K2000 offers better overall performance than slower-RPM, capacity-oriented drives at impressively low power-consumption rates. When compared to the previous generation Ultrastar A7K1000, the A7K2000 offers up to a 155% improvement in sustained data transfer rate, and a 120% improvement in watts-per-GB. With five Advanced Power Management modes, a 36% reduction in watts during low-RPM idle mode, and using less than 1W during standby/sleep mode, the Ultrastar A7K2000 can help data centers achieve lower AC power and HVAC requirements, freeing up precious headroom for growing enterprise needs.

Enhancing Data Safety and Security

To ensure the utmost in data safety and security, the Ultrastar A7K2000 is also available with a bulk data encryption (BDE) option. When enabled, the HGST BDE implementation encrypts all data on the drive using a private security key as it is written to the disk, and then decrypts it with the key as it is retrieved, giving users an extreme level of data protection. Unlike software- based encryption solutions, the HGST BDE implementation is hardware-based, so it doesn’t slow the system down. This technology also speeds up and simplifies the drive re-deployment and decommissioning process. By deleting the encryption key, the data is rendered unreadable, thereby eliminating the need for time-consuming, multi-pattern data overwrite.

The Ultrastar™ A7K1000 delivers up to one terabyte of storage capacity in a standard

3.5-inch form factor, filling a vital need for high-density storage in the enterprise. As the third

generation design, based on the popular Deskstar™ E7K500, the Ultrastar A7K1000 contin-

Hitachi Ultrastar A7K2000 2TB HDD

Review Back in August 2009, Hitachi announced that it was “shipping the industry’s first 2TB 7200rpm desktop hard disk drive” in the shape of the Deskstar 7K2000.

Hitachi's Ultrastar A7K2000: better duration specs than the Deskstar

That statement may have been accurate, depending on your definition of ‘shipping’, but we received a 2TB 7200rpm WD Caviar Black - reviewed here in September, and it has taken Hitachi this long to deliver its own 2TB drive.

Imagine our mild surprise when we opened the box Hitachi sent us and found a 2TB Ultrastar A7K2000 rather than the Deskstar 7K2000 that we had expected. Imagine our shock when we discovered that the Ultrastar sells for a pricy £243 while the Deskstar has a tiny price tag of £130.

To put that in context, the 2TB WD Caviar Black drive with 64MB of cache cost £204 at launch and has actually risen slightly in price since then to around £215 now. If you find a 2TB Caviar Black on sale for £169, you can be sure it's the old version with 16MB of cache, but the difference between what Hitachi and WD are both now charging seems ridiculous.

It makes the Deskstar look amazingly cheap, while the Ultrastar appears to be rather expensive. The hardware in both the Ultrastar and Deskstar drives is essentially the same, with five platters and ten heads, 32MB of cache, a 7200rpm spin speed and a 3Gb/s Sata interface. The nominal capacity of 2TB yields a true 1863GB once the drive has been formatted.

The WD Caviar drive only uses four platters and it's noticeably more quiet than the Hitachi when running.

Naturally enough, we wondered about the differences between Deskstar and Ultrastar drives and happily found a Hitachi chart that explains the point. In essence, the Deskstar isn't rated for Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) while the Ultrastar has a rating of 1.2 million hours.
