Great speakers. As a UPS driver, I use mine every day. Over the past 5 years or so I've had several JBL speakers, all of which still work even though the batteries are weak from so many charging cycles. I've had a flip 4 since it was introduced and just bought a second one three weeks ago. I love the size and functionality of the 4. GREAT SPEAKERS!

Just figured out to use the app how its supposed to be used. I have two connected together and the sound is pretty amazing. I have 2 more coming for christmas. Cant wait to connect 4!!!

I bought my Flip 4 because I needed a speaker that would be durable, but at the same look good, and have good sound. I got all of that with this speaker. Extremely durable, waterproof, and impeccable sound. This is what should be in every portable speaker in my opinion. The Passive Bass Radiators add to the sound so much, and they look super cool. I listen to music in the shower with it all the time, and I don't have to worry because it's waterproof. Wherever I go in the Summer, I'm going to take it with me.

This thing has great quality and power, you can hear it all over the house!! I use in my bathroom every day

Good improvement especially in bass in the new Flip. Seems like it takes less time to sync up when 2 are connected. I also Like the small aesthetic changes to differentiate it from the Flip 3. Not to much needed to change there. It's just better than the competition especially at it's price.

James B Lansing would be proud. From the minute I opened the package, I knew this was a quality product. What I didn't expect is such incredible sound from this small speaker.

It sounds fantastic in both vertical and horizontal positions, and holds a charge freakishly well. Charging is easy with the high quality cable included and the visual LED meter lets you know your battery strength. Turn on-off and bluetooth pairing sound FX, very cool! Fit and finish, quality of construction all better than expected in this price range, and the control buttons, which almost seem to be pushing through the water proof grill cloth, work well and feel expensive.

Pairing is quick and easy and I noticed that even though I wandered away from the speaker with my phone and moved around the house, it stayed connected and played without breaking up. The ability to pair more JBL connect+ devices is a great feature and worked nicely. JBL also included an aux jack under the waterproof cover where you charge the speaker - they didn't forget anything when they designed this speaker, but the best feature by far is the amazing SOUND QUALITY!

Yes, there are still some of out there who love great sound! I love and truly appreciate the incredible dynamic range this little speaker produces. Both side bass baffles seemed a little gimmicky at first, but do their job very well as this little speaker produces lower frequency response than I though possible. In the Kitchen, it fills the whole room with quality sound regardless or the volume or type of music I'm listening to. In the shower (yes waterproof means waterproof) the tile acoustics allow this little gem to really shine with sound quality so dramatic, you'll want to shower till the hot's gone.

Kudos to the folks at JBL, this one really lives up to the name! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

The JBL Flip 4 is an excellent portable bluetooth speaker. In my opinion, it is hands down the best portable speaker in it's price range. It produces excellent sound quality and is completely waterproof. It is very affordable and provides excellent battery life. The battery life is rated at 12 hours per charge with moderate usage. My Flip 4 was the center of attention at my sister in laws birthday party. The speaker played from around 3:00 pm until 11:00 pm at about 70 % volume. When all was said and done the battery was still indicating 2 bars left out of 5. People could not believe how long it had been playing and every one kept asking who made it and how much was it worth? I have to say that the Flip 4 is a definite steal. I also compared it against my other portable speakers and this is my conclusion. The speaker is well balanced and has a emphasis on mid-range and treble. You do not need to use an equalizer app with this speaker as it sounds very good right out the box. The sound is crisp, clear and loud with no distortion. The bass is also good and goes down to around 70hz which is impressive for a speaker this size. In fact, it has the same frequency response as the JBL Xtreme. Another great feature is the JBL connect plus, which allows you to pair up to 100+ JBL compatible speakers. I truly wish that JBL releases a firmware update for the Charge 3 and the Xtreme as I would love to be able to hear all three speakers synced and playing together. Thank you again JBL for hitting another Grand Slam with the JBL Flip 4! [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

The size, sound quality, and volume range are all amazing, just as I've come to expect from JBL products. That said, the details make the difference, so I've listed my top 5 favorite features below.

1) The IPX7 waterproof rating is awesome. IPX7 means the speaker is fully waterproof even if submerged in up to 3 feet of water. I got over my initial fear of testing it out and actually dunked this guy in a pool with no issues. Great for shower jamz and pool parties.

2) Battery life is amazing. I've been casually using this thing an hour or two every other day for a few weeks now and still haven't to recharge. The battery indicator lights under the power button are a nice touch too.

3) The Bluetooth connects quickly and easily. I also love that I can connect two devices to the speaker at once since I play music from both my phone and iPad pretty frequently. Other wireless speakers I've had in the past have required me to re-pair every time I switched devices, which was a pain.

4) The bass radiators are actually pretty dope. It's cool to see the bass in action, and it's not a feature I've seen in many other portable speakers.

5) The USB charging cable that comes with the speaker is pleasantly long. This may seem minor/dumb, but like I said, the details make the difference.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to test the JBL Connect feature since these are the only Connect-compatible speakers I have (I also own a JBL Clip 2, but that's unfortunately not compatible - photo below for size comparison though). This was a bummer because the feature sounds like something I would totally take advantage of. I also haven't tested the built-in speakerphone, but that's one I probably won't use too often.

Overall, I highly recommend this speaker. In fact, it might have just become my new gold standard for portable music players. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.]

I bought this speaker a week ago. I accidentally dropped it on the floor from my table ONCE and the thing stopped working!!! I didn't even get to use it for two weeks and it broked## I tried different kinds of method to fix the speaker but NOTHING worked!!! I understand the necessity to add different fancy functions to a product for attracting consumers: In this case, a waterproof speaker. But before adding these insignificant functions, could you at least try to make it shockproof?? It even comes with a handle that expects us to take it outdoors, but how in the world can it take a rocky road when it couldn't even handle a wooden floor at home???? A speaker I bought in China that cost less than 40USD doesn't have an excellent sound quality, but at least it won't break the moment I bought it and paid off its price!!!! If anyone considers buying this speaker I recommend reconsidering!! I hope there will be improvements in the future but for now, it's hopeless and highly disappointed... : (

JBL Flip 4 Bluetooth speaker Review

With July upon us, summer is finally in full swing, and when these hot, sunny days have you feeling the urge to hit the pavement – get out and have some fun – you can rely on plenty of mobile devices to bring the entertainment along with you.Obviously, that means bringing along your smartphone, but to get the most out of an impromptu summer cookout or lazy afternoon at the pool, you're going to want to share some of that entertainment with all your friends – and who wants to spend that time huddled around a handset?

Instead, you're probably thinking about pairing your phone with a versatile, outdoor-friendly speaker, letting you play DJ and share your favorite new tracks with everyone within earshot. There are plenty of options for doing so, but when it comes to feature sets best suited for summer listening, the JBL Flip 4 caught our eye.

Promising waterproof operation, a rugged, rubberized build, and the ability to deliver hours and hours of party-fueling tunes, the JBL Flip 4 sure looks like it hits all the notes we're looking for. Does the portable speaker meet all its potential? Let's check it out.

In the Box

  • JBL Flip 4
  • Micro USB charging cable
  • Warranty card
  • Quick-start guide
  • Safety sheet
While there's any number of designs a mobile Bluetooth speaker can take, it feels like the majority of them go the “tube” or the “brick” route. And here, JBL wholeheartedly embraces the former with the cylindrical Flip 4.The hefty speaker is a mix of molded plastic and an expansive fabric-covered grille. While the whole design is largely monochromatic, the Flip 4 is available in a decent variety of colors, including some bold, fun-looking shades. Each end of the tube is populated by a passive bass radiator, recessed to help avoid accidental damage. They still feel a little exposed, but it's fun watching them pulse and twitch to the beat. Around front we don't see much a prominently centered JBL logo, but behind the fabric weave on each side hide the speaker's 40mm drivers. Up top we find the primary controls, a set of four raised buttons: Bluetooth, volume up and down, and a multi-feature play key. Tucked a little further back behind is the Flip 4's power button with battery-charge indicator right next to it. There's also an initially mysterious hourglass-looking button that turns out to help control multi-speaker JBL Connect+ functionality, which we'll discuss in a bit. A deep rubber flap conceals the micro-USB charging port and analog 1/8-inch port for accepting non-Bluetooth audio sources – and as you pop that flap open, it becomes pretty clear you're compromising the speaker's water-resistance in the process. And finally, there's a lanyard loop to ease in carrying the Flip 4 around. That water-resistance comes in the form of an IPX7 rating, meaning the speaker can withstand immersion in up to one meter of water. Officially, that's nice clean freshwater, but JBL says that the Flip 4 should withstand a dip in a salt or chlorine-treated pool, though recommends washing the speaker in fresh water after. Also keep in mind: while the Flip 4 is indeed waterproof, it won't float, so you're going to want to keep an eye on it around deep water. A Bluetooth speaker doesn't always need its own app – and sometimes even when the manufacturer goes to the trouble of delivering one, it doesn't do much to add value to the listening experience. Well, while JBL very much has an app for the Flip 4, this one thankfully has some real functionality to it.Now, you can use the JBL Flip 4 just like a generic Bluetooth speaker, and doing so couldn't be easier: hit the big button shaped like the Bluetooth rune, and pair on your phone. That will give you music playback, as well as volume and playback controls. All pretty standard, right? So what's the app for?Well, once you download and install JBL Connect, you'll gain access to three additional features for the speaker. Maybe the most useful there is the ability to set up access to a voice assistant like Siri (on iOS) or Google Now. Normally, the arrow-shaped play button on the speaker acts as a pause/play button when pressed, or to advance to the next tract when you press-and-hold. But once you set up your voice assistant in the app, that single-press action instead pauses the music and lets you perform voice actions. That's pretty cool, but we have a few issues with the implementation. For one, the audio quality (we tested with Google Now) of the voice assistance is noticeably lower than that of the music – it sounds almost like you're hearing it over a phone line. It's also quite a bit quieter than music, and while that might be nice if you wanted to do a quick voice search without everyone in the room hearing, we wish there were controls to set the volume to our tastes. There's also the issue that you lose the ability to pause music in this mode. While that's clearly a concession to the number of available hardware buttons on the Flip 4, why not link the voice assistant feature to a button that's not routinely used during listening – like the Bluetooth pairing button? That way you could still easily pause things at your discretion. JBL's app also opens up two special modes for users with multiple speakers. Remember that hourglass-shaped JBL Connect+ button on the speaker's back? With the help of the app, you can press that button to tie the outputs of multiple speakers together. In one mode, you can chain together a whole mess of speakers (up to 100), all cranking out the same tunes. In the other, you can create an expanded stereo effect by taking two speakers, and dedicating one to the left channel, and the other to the right. We weren't able to check out either of those capabilities (thanks to only having one JBL Flip 4 for this review), but it's worth noting that the JBL Connect+ feature they rely on is new to the company's speakers, and won't work with older models. In addition to working with voice assistants, the microphone JBL gives the Flip 4 lets you use the unit as a speakerphone. Sound quality's really not bad, but you're still going to want to keep relatively close to the speaker in order to be as intelligible as possible to the party on the other end.

JBL Flip 4 Speaker: Pairing Your Mobile Via Bluetooth

45328 views August 23, 2017 July 28, 2019 Florian 22

CAUTION: Electrical Device. Read the safety instructions!

Step 1

Turn on the loudspeaker by pressing the ON/OFF power button. Then press the Bluetooth button and you will hear an acoustic signal. The pairing mode is activated and the speaker searches for nearby devices which have Bluetooth enabled.

Step 2

Turn on the Bluetooth mode on your device (smartphone, tablet, computer). The Bluetooth light of the speaker flashes blue while the two devices try to pair.

Step 3

Select the model “JBL Flip 4” from the device list. If a code is requested, enter the combination “0000” and confirm the pairing. Once the connection has been established, the blue Bluetooth light will stay solid.

Step 4

The speaker will automatically connect to the last used device (smartphone, tablet, computer). If a connection cannot be established, the speaker switches back to the pairing mode. After approximately 10 to 15 minutes of inactivity, the speaker automatically switches to the stand-by mode.

Additional Information

The “JBL Connect+” mode allows to connect up to 100 JBL speakers simultaneously. First, pair the Flip4 speaker as described in steps 1 to 3. Then press the “JBL Connect+” button on both speakers to start the pairing. Both speakers will then play the music from the same device (smartphone, tablet, computer) at the same time.

NOTE: All speakers must support the new “JBL Connect+” standard. It is currently not possible to connect the Flip3 and Flip4 speakers to each other. The Flip3 speaker (and others from JBL) only supports the previous “JBL Connect” standard.

The play button must be pressed to enable Apple Siri OR Google Now, if this service is enabled on the device. The language assistant can be switched on and off via the JBL Connect app, which is available free of charge via the Apple iTunes or Google Store.

The LED lights and colors have different meanings.

Light Status Speaker Status
All lights off The speaker is turned off OR the battery is fully charged. A complete charging cycle requires approx 3.5 hours. The total playtime is approx 12 hours.
LED flashes blue  The speaker is set to the pairing mode and ready to connect with a device.
LED solid blue The speaker is successfully paired with a device.
LED flashes white The speaker is set to the “Stand By” mode OR is set to the pairing mode and ready to connect with another JBL speaker.

JBL Flip 4 waterproof Bluetooth speaker will make your summer lit [Review]

Summer is finally here, and so far, I have been loving it. While I haven't gone to any fancy beach parties, I have had quite the good time relaxing in my backyard. Nothing beats soaking up the sun while laying in a chaise lounge. As the breeze blows by, I sip my favorite beverage -- Perrier sparkling mineral water.

While this scene sounds great, there is still something missing -- music. While listening to the songs from birds and sounds of lawnmowers can be enjoyable, I prefer to rock out to my favorite tunes. Ranging from 2 Chainz to Wings, I blast my favorite songs -- not so loud as to bother my neighbors, however. This year, the Bluetooth speaker that is serving up my jams is the wonderful JBL Flip 4. It is rugged, waterproof, and most importantly, it sounds phenomenal.

Unboxing

Impressions

The speaker itself is essentially a tube, and the model I am testing is a beautiful teal color. The body is comprised of rubber and a beautiful woven fabric. It invites you to touch it, and feeling the materials in your hand is very rewarding. There is even an attached lanyard for your wrist so you can carry it without worry of drops.

There are four buttons on the top. A button for Bluetooth pairing, volume up and down, and play. The triangular play button does triple-duty, as it also pauses when pressed once and next when double-pressed. If you'd like, you can even enable the play button, when held, to summon either Siri or Google's assistant right from the speaker itself. Cool, right? This is enabled using the JBL app.

The rear of the speaker is home to two buttons -- one for power and the other for connecting more JBL Flip 4 speakers -- yes, you can connect multiple speakers (more than 100!), but I only have one, so I was not able to test this, sadly.

Also on the rear is a rubber door, that when lifted, exposes two ports -- a micro USB connector for charging and a 3.5mm jack for non-Bluetooth devices. Unfortunately, the door can be hard to pry open sometimes. The speaker comes with an absolutely gorgeous USB cable -- it is flat, orange, and the Type-A end is reversible. Well done, JBL.

To test the speaker's IPx7 waterproofing, I used it outdoors in my backyard. While I do not have a pool, I left it outside for days where it was regularly rained on. I even left it on my lawn for my sprinkler system to soak. Despite the harsh conditions, the JBL Flip 4 survived. This is beneficial, as I can see myself forgetting it outside in the summer. To test its submergibility, I filled my bathroom sink and dunked it. All was fine.

OK, but how does the JBL Flip 4 sound? Well, I am happy to report that this is one of the best-sounding portable Bluetooth speakers that I've ever heard. Seriously, folks, it's remarkable what this little guy can do. Highs are very clear, while it emits some very strong bass thanks to its dual radiators. As a fan of hip-hop music, solid bass is very important to me. New albums from artists like 2 Chainz and Roc Marciano sound great.

But wait, does this mean that rock songs will have too much bass and sound muddy? Nope. When listening to Ms. Joni Mitchell or Smashing Pumpkins, for instance, the songs were very vibrant and punchy -- an excellent experience. In fact, I listened to a very eclectic mix of music genres beyond rock and hip-hop, including dubstep, dance, techno, and even classical -- the JBL Flip 4 did a great job with them all.

The JBL Flip 4 has a 3,000mAh battery, which the company claims will last 12 hours. This will obviously vary based on usage -- including volume levels. I seem to average about 8-9 hours with my usage, which meets my needs perfectly.

The speaker includes a microphone as well, allowing it to double as a speaker phone. Calls sounded fine from the Flip 4, but I like it more for the convenience aspect. If my phone is on a table out of reach, and the speaker is next to me, I can easily answer a call without getting up -- hooray for laziness!

Overall, for $99 you cannot go wrong here. The JBL Flip 4 has everything going for it. The Bluetooth speaker is well designed, attractive, and rugged. Most importantly, it sounds amazing and can get loud -- great for small parties. While I absolutely adore the teal color, you can choose from many others, such as blue, black, and even a cool camouflage design.

The JBL Flip 4 is highly recommended. Prepare to have your summer turnt up, y'all!
