Buying an old iPhone? Find out what sets the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S apart

If you’re puzzling over which iPhone you should buy, but you lack the funds for a new model, then you may be tempted to pick up an older iPhone. Apple continues to support iPhones for several years after release and they tend to last well, so this could be a smart and frugal move. The oldest iPhone Apple still sells is the iPhone 7, but you might want to pick up an older used iPhone for less.

The successor to Apple’s iPhone 6 was the iPhone 6S. It looks identical to its predecessor, so you may well be wondering what’s the difference? Below, we spell out the hardware specifications of both iPhones, and dip into an analysis of the categories where you’re likely to see the biggest differences. This is the iPhone 6S vs. iPhone 6 comparison.

Performance, battery life, and charging

Jessica Lee Star/Digital Trends

Every new iPhone is faster than those that came before, and the iPhone 6S is no exception. Apple jumped from the A8 chipset that was in the iPhone 6 to its A9 chipset. Similarly, the 6S upgraded from the M8 coprocessor to the M9. These upgrades translate to faster processing speeds — about 70 percent faster, according to Apple. The iPhone 6S also boasts 2GB of RAM, which is double the RAM in the iPhone 6. That means that the iPhone 6S is noticeably faster than the iPhone 6 in most tasks and a much more capable multitasker. In terms of storage, both come in 16GB, 64GB, or 128GB versions.

The iPhone 6S actually has a smaller battery than the iPhone 6, but the more efficient processor balances things out and it tends to last a bit longer on an average day. Both charge via the Lightning port and take a similar length of time to juice up.

Winner: Apple iPhone 6S

Design and durability

In terms of look and size, there isn’t much of a difference between the two, in fact, you’ll struggle to tell them apart. The iPhone 6S is 0.01 inches thicker and half an ounce heavier, but those are hardly noticeable differences. Both phones are 5.44 inches tall by 2.64 inches wide, and both feature a 4.7-inch display. Both have the headphone jacks, a Lightning port for charging, and that iconic Touch ID home button that was a feature of iPhones for many years.

Both phones are aluminum, so they’re pretty tough, but the iPhone 6S is built from superior Series 7000 aluminum, which should be a little stronger. This change may have been a response to the bendgate furor around the iPhone 6 Plus.

Winner: Tie

Display

Both of these iPhones have a 4.7-inch display with a 1334 x 750-pixel resolution, which works out to 326 pixels per inch. There’s no dividing them here. Only the 6S has Apple’s 3D Touch technology, but we’ll deal with that in the special features section below. Visually speaking, there’s no difference between these displays.

Winner: Tie

Camera

The iPhone 6S blows the iPhone 6 out of the water in the camera department with a seriously beefed-up main camera and a much-improved selfie camera. The main camera is rated at 12 megapixels, up from 8 megapixels, and the front-facing camera has jumped to 5 megapixels from a woefully inadequate 1.2 megapixels. The 6S is also capable of shooting 4K resolution video, while the iPhone 6 is limited to 1080p. You can expect to capture much better photos with the iPhone 6S.

Winner: Apple iPhone 6S

Software and updates

While the iPhone 6 launched with iOS 8 and the iPhone 6S launched with iOS 9, both have since been updated to iOS 12. It looks likely that they’ll also be updated to iOS 13. There’s no significant difference between them on the software or update front, but, looking to the future, the iPhone 6S will likely get one extra update over the iPhone 6.

Winner: Tie

Special features

Jessica Lee Star/Digital Trends

Immediately apparent is the inclusion of the 3D touch feature on the iPhone 6S. Essentially, 3D Touch is enabled by a pressure-sensitive screen that can pick up on how hard you press the display. You can lightly press to peek into things, for example lightly pressing on a photo in your gallery will give you a pop-up preview. You can press harder to pop straight into the content.

The iPhone 6S also supports a slightly newer and better Bluetooth version and it comes in Rose Gold, which is not an option with the iPhone 6.

Winner: Apple iPhone 6S

Price and availability

If you want to buy an iPhone 6S or an iPhone 6 today, then you’ll likely be buying a refurbished handset or a used phone. Prices vary widely, but you can pick up an iPhone 6 starting from around $110 and an iPhone 6S will cost $40 or so more.

Overall winner: Apple iPhone 6S

There’s no doubt that the iPhone 6S is a better phone. There isn’t a huge gap between them; the main differences are the improved performance and the better cameras in the iPhone 6S, but they are important updates. Since both can be had pretty cheaply now, and the iPhone 6S is liable to last you a bit longer, we would definitely recommend it over the iPhone 6.

I got 6S cheaper for my wife after 7's debut. I did all the initial setting, and the impression written below is hers. I myself use iPhone 7, so I would like to write what I felt comparing them.

It looks the same as my previous phone, iPhone 6, so there is nothing new about it. If I point out a difference, it has new colors. That's it. Having said that, I like the design from 6, and I assume it can be said that it is a typical iPhone design.

This also is the same as 6. My wife says it feels reasonable as it is her first smartphone. Compared to iPhone SE, which she thought about getting, it is bigger and my wife said it was difficult to hold. But in two months after purchase, she seems she got used to it.

Operability is the same as previous iPhone. My wife had been using my iPad mini 2, so it seems she has no problem in using this. The accuracy of touch ID seems to have been improved from 6, but it is not as good as 7's. She hasn't been able to utilize 3D touch.

I used this for trying some things out and did initial setting, and I didn't see it is inferior to 7. because I replaced iPhone 6 with 7, I was able to feel the improvement in response, but if you are replacing 6S with 7, you wouldn't be able to see the difference.

My wife seems to be using this comfortably as this works without making her feel stressed.

Good old iPhone menu. This is from iOS, so I don't feel any uneasiness. My wife is using this without feeling uneasy as it is the same as iPad. She seemed to have been muddled, though, at first, with voice calls and texts which she doesn't use with iPad.

Good old iOS. It is bigger than SE, so it is easier to see.

Voice call sound quality seems good. Actually, when I talk to her using my iPhone 7, it feels it sounds clearer.

My wife didn't listen to music with her previous mobile, but it seems she listens to music now using my old earphone in her spare time.

Because she is a very light user, it lasts for two days easily whereas I have to charge my iPhone 7 every day. I am not saying 6S has better battery life or 7 has worse battery life; it is just the matter of usage.

This is an old model, but this has performance enough and necessary. It is great that I can get this cheaper than 7. I use this often to tell her how to use it or when I do some settings, but I don't see the difference in performance with iPhone 7. I launched the same app at the same time, and 7 was quicker just by a second or two. You may not see the difference if you don't compare them.

My wife likes it for its camera performance and the image quality of the photos she can see.

4 things the LG G5 does better than the iPhone

Which is better: the iPhone 6s or the LG G5?

LG just unveiled its LG G5 at MWC in Las Vegas, and it's proving something of a hit. Some of its specs and features, certainly, put Apple's finest in the shade. In this article we'll compare the LG G5 with the iPhone 6s, and look particularly at four areas where LG looks to be ahead: cameras, screen, processing power and battery specs.

(This isn't a totally fair comparison, of course, given that the iPhone 6s is five months old and the G5 has just been announced. Bring on the iPhone 7, we say! But it gives us a good idea of which will be the smartphone to beat for the next six months.)

iPhone 6s vs LG G5: Cameras

Let's start with the all-important camera setup.

LG has gone down the dual-camera route, which is a bit of a surprise - this approach not having worked out too well for some of the company's rivals.

As well as the front-facing camera, the G5 has two more cameras (one 16Mp and one 8Mp) pointing to the rear. But this isn't for 3D or the ability to refocus after taking the shot (gimmicky but quite cool, if you ask us); this is to help the cameras adapt to different fields of view. The 16Mp has a conventional 78-degree lens while the 8Mp goes much wider at 135 degrees so you can fit more in your shot.

The iPhone 6s only has two cameras (a phone with just two cameras! Imagine saying that in 2002), the standard rear- and front-facing combination.

On specs, too, LG is ahead, offering 16Mp at the rear to the iPhone's 12, and 8Mp at the front to the iPhone's 5.

iPhone 6s vs LG G5: Screen

Screen size is generally a question of preferences rather than 'better' and 'worse', so there will be those who like the G5's 5.3in display and others who prefer the iPhone 6s and its 4.7in display; one gives slightly more screen space, the other results in a slightly more portable device. (On the latter point, the 6s is 16g lighter than the G5.)

If you prefer a larger screen, of course, you could always plump for the iPhone 6s Plus, which has a screen measuring 5.5in.

But screen resolution is another matter. The G5 has a vastly higher screen resolution and pixel density, at 2560x1440 and 554 pixels per inch (ppi). The iPhone 6s offers a comparatively puny 1334x750 and 326 ppi.

The 6s is rated as Retina HD, but this term has always felt like a misnomer; it refers to the resolution - which is obviously higher than that of the iPhone 5s, since it covers a larger area - rather than to the actual sharpness, determined by pixel density. Both the iPhone 6s Plus and the iPhone 6s (and their predecessors, the 6 and the 6 Plus) are rated as Retina HD, but only the Plus models (which have a pixel density of 401ppi) are actually sharper than standard Retina iPhones.

It's debatable, of course, to what extent the human eye will be able to detect and benefit from a smartphone with a screen resolution of over 500; some would say that anything over 400 is overkill. But Apple is certainly lagging behind on raw specs.

iPhone 6s vs LG G5: Power

This is an area where it's hard to for us to draw clear conclusion until we've got the phones into our feared testing lab, but we'll say this: the LG's Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor is quad-core (the iPhone's A9 is dual-core) and is accompanied by 4GB of RAM to the iPhone's 2GB.

Watch this space to see how they get on in real-world environments.

iPhone 6s vs LG G5: Battery

The LG G5 has a (removable) 2800mAh batttery. That actually represents something of a disappointment for LG fans, who suspected that they might be getting a whopping 4000mAh. But it's still streets ahead of the iPhone 6s and its 1715mAh unit.

Being in charge of the OS as well as the hardware enables Apple to make its devices as power-efficient as possible, and this, combined with the additional strain of a higher-resolution screen and twin cameras, may mean that the gap in battery life is less dramatic than the raw specs would suggest; but our money would be on the G5 lasting longer. In any case, we can't wait to compare the two devices in real-world testing once review samples are available.

iPhone 6s vs LG G5: Colour options

There are four colour options for the G5: gold, silver, titan (dark grey) and pink. And the iPhone 6s is available in essentially the same choices: gold, silver, Space Grey and Rose Gold.
